Accordance 9 Sneak Peek: Holiday Verses

We don't typically talk about upcoming features so far ahead of their release, but the news that Apple is going to be incorporating Scripture lookup directly into Spotlight has us scrambling a bit. We're currently working on a feature for Accordance 9 which would utilize iCal syncing to automatically present you with verses appropriate to the current holiday or special event.

For example, if you launch Accordance on the fourth Thursday of November, a Holiday Verses window will open listing every verse containing the word "thanksgiving." Accordance will even use GPS data to determine which holidays are observed in your current location. For example, if you live in Canada, the thanksgiving verses would come up on the second Monday of October.

Now, some of you might think this Holiday Verses feature is just a frill, but it has very practical uses. When you highlight one or more verses in the Holiday Verses window, a Create Greeting Card button at the bottom of the window becomes undimmed. Click this button, and Accordance will send the selected verses to iPhoto. A new greeting card will be created with a theme appropriate to the current holiday and with the text of the verses you selected automatically inserted. Just add a photo and print your own holiday greeting cards!

I'm afraid I can't include a screenshot yet, but I've been having a lot of fun playing with this feature. For example, today the Holiday Verses window displayed the following verse:

Like a madman who throws flaming darts and deadly arrows, so is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I was only joking! (Proverbs 26:18-19 HCSB)

I think that says it all right there!

I hope by this time next year you will add the feature to take a photo shot and timer. It would be great to see the reaction when one finally gets it and how long it took!

You have to take any April 1 announcements with a large spoon of skepticism :-)

Nice April fools, but let me ask the subversive question -- why not implement the functionality of the Bibliblog article via an Accordance spotlight importer? Done well, this might be a lot more convenient than the Accordance widget.
