The Accordance Blog: tips on feeds, subscribing, and navigating

Over the last several months, since our transition to a new web hosting service, we have been tweaking and improving our blog. Because the blog is one of our primary ways of communicating with our users (both current and potential), we want to make sure that you are getting the most out of your experience and are able to get up-to-date information on your favorite Mac Bible software. In this post I'd like to go over a few tips that can help you in this area.

For those new to the 'blogosphere,' the terms thrown around can be a bit confusing…feeders, syndication, RSS, subscribe, etc. All of these revolve around how you read a blog. When a blogger writes a post, not only is the content published to the actual website, but it is also distributed in the form of a feed. By using different feed readers you can subscribe to a blog, and read all your favorite posts in one convenient place. There are many different readers out there, but based on our current subscribers most people are using the reader built into OSX through Safari or Mail, and Google.

RSS Logo

You can subscribe to our feed in a couple different ways. The best way is to click on the RSS logo at the top of the blog. This will direct you to FeedBurner and allow you to select the reader of your choice.

Another way is to click on the RSS logo located in the address bar of your browser (In Firefox it should be blue, and in Safari it will say RSS). Both Safari, and Firefox allow you to customize your default reader. In the preferences dialogue in Firefox, click on the Applications tab, then type in 'feed'. In the Action drop down menu it will allow you to select your reader of choice.

Firefox Prefs

In the Safari preferences, click on the RSS Tab. Safari gives you the option to use Mail, or the browser itself; either one will work great. (this screen grab is from the Safari 4 Beta)

The last way to subscribe to our feed is through email. Through the form in our sidebar, simply fill in your address, and FeedBurner will deliver each blog post to you.

For those interested in keeping track of each comment received on a particular post, or on every post, you can also subscribe to comments using the drop down menu located at the bottom of each post (whether or not you have even made a comment of your own).

If you like a particular post, or found it helpful as a tutorial for yourself or a friend, use the Share section to save the post to your online bookmarks in Google or Del.icio.us. Or, you can recommend a post to a friend or colleague on Facebook, or Twitter.

Add This

As you can see we've worked hard in making the content of our blog readily available for everyone in a variety of formats. We hope that you will be able to keep up-to-date with the latest news and info about Accordance, sharpen your skills with our How-tos, and share our blog with your friends through bookmarks and social networking. Speaking of which, if you are a blogger, don't forget to add one of our banners to your site to help spread the word about your favorite Mac Bible Software!

Manya times I find the use of Accordance quite daunting, I know you all have many helps etc, but if you are a lower level computer person, this stuff is tricky. JD

JD:

We have a wealth of resources available to aid in the use of Accordance, which you seem to allude to. I would encourage you to go through the Training DVD, which is now posted in entirety online for free. This will make a big difference in your use of Accordance.

Also, if there is ever a specific question you have on something, don't hesitate to post it in our forum where anyone from power users to Accordance developers can help.

Nice article, Rick.

I really like the blog design changes (and THANKS for thinking about the blog for this site design tweak!).
