The Accordance Blog: tips on feeds, subscribing, and navigating

April 24, 2009 - Rick Bennett — Over the last several months, since our transition to a new web hosting service, we have been tweaking and improving our blog. Because the blog is one of our primary ways of communicating with our users (both current and potential), we want to make sure that you are getting the most out of your experience and are able to get up-to-date information on your favorite Mac Bible software. In this post I'd like to go over a few tips that can help you in this area. For those new to the 'blogosphere,' the terms thrown around can be a bit ...

Designed for Mac. Trusted by Scholars. Right for You.

April 23, 2009 - David Lang — When we released Accordance 8 last year and gave our web-site a fresh new look, we decided it was also time for a new slogan. You can see it in the banner at the top of this blog page: "Designed for Mac. Trusted by Scholars. Right for You." J. P. Kang, who is responsible for our official Accordance Twitter feed, recently asked our "followers" (that always sounds kind of egomaniacal to me) to "retweet" our slogan. That reminded me that I have never really talked about what we mean by our slogan. The main reason I haven't is that I hope ...

Accordance and "Loose Loins"

April 22, 2009 - David Lang — Doctoral candidate and Accordance power user Rick Mansfield recently blogged about an interesting expression in Isaiah 45:1. In that passage, the LORD says of Cyrus that he will "loose the loins" of kings. Rick uses Accordance to examine the expression, and even includes a photo from the Bible Lands PhotoGuide (now on sale). While his post is not an Accordance tutorial, it is an excellent example of the exegetical process, and well worth checking out.

Graphic Bible Study

April 21, 2009 - David Lang — One of the best ways to deepen your study of the Bible is to make it "graphic." That's why we provide so many resources with great visual content. Our interactive Bible Atlas has led the field since it was first released in 1998. (To see it in action, watch these videos). Our Bible Lands PhotoGuide offers great pictures of biblical locations, but is even more valuable for all the teaching material it contains. Our Timeline makes it easy to explore the historical context of Biblical events. (To see it in action, watch these videos). Then ...

Render Unto Caesar

April 15, 2009 - David Lang — Today in the United States is Tax Day, the day when income taxes are due to be paid to the government. No, it's not exactly the happiest day of the calendar year, but on the bright side, our experience of paying taxes connects us with the Biblical world in ways few other experiences can. I mean, when we approach the Bible, we enter a world which is very different from our own. So many Biblical practices seem foreign to us and require some research into the historical context. But taxation . . . now there's a practice we can immediately relate ...

It's Good to Have Options

April 13, 2009 - David Lang — When asked by a flight attendant if he wanted something to eat, the airline passenger asked, "What are my options?" "Yes or no," was the flight attendant's reponse. While air travelers may have precious few options these days, Accordance users have plenty. Here is a list of ten cool options: all of which can be accessed by holding down the option key: 1. Resize the text in all panes. Hold down the option key while clicking the text-size buttons above a text pane, and the text in all panes of that window will be resized. & ...

Maximizing your Hebrew Potential, II

April 10, 2009 - Rick Bennett — In my last post, I discussed the Hebrew workspace I use in my Hebrew Syntax class, and how you can use Accordance to enhance your Hebrew experience. In this post we'll continue working through the tabs in that workspace. The second tab (from the left) is used to display the results of word searches. Since I'm addicted to right-clicking (old habits die hard), I use that method to do word searches within the text I'm working on. You can also use the drop down menu, or resource palette to accomplish the same task. By ...

Searching for Maundy Thursday

April 09, 2009 - David Lang — The first time I heard the term "Maundy Thursday," I wondered how the same day could be both a Monday and a Thursday. Back then, I didn't have Accordance, so I had to rely on the explanation of a friend. Unfortunately, while she was able to explain that Maundy Thurdsay commemorates the original observance of the Lord's Supper, she had no idea where the term "Maundy" came from. These days when I run across a religious observance I've never heard of, I'll just fire up Accordance and do a Search All for it. A search of all my tools for ...

International Politics

April 08, 2009 - David Lang — In recent days, world leaders have been meeting to discuss how the world is affected by the policies of individual nations. As the world becomes smaller and information moves faster, it becomes clear that each of us is ultimately affected by events and decisions taking place on the other side of the world. Yet this is nothing new. The ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah were also affected by international politics, even though news didn't travel nearly as fast. Consider the synchronisms evident in this timeline: Here we s ...

Print Selection . . . Honest!

April 02, 2009 - David Lang — By now I think everyone has figured out that the Holiday Verses feature I talked up yesterday was an April Fools' joke. Today I want to talk about the usefulness of a feature you already have which is no joke: namely, Print Selection. Tuesday night my wife, kids, and I put on a mini-concert for the residents of a local nursing home. We did our best Von Trapp family impersonation, singing "So Long, Farewell" and some songs from other musicals, and then we had the residents join us for a few well known hymns. Wanting to have lyrics p ...

Accordance 9 Sneak Peek: Holiday Verses

April 01, 2009 - David Lang — We don't typically talk about upcoming features so far ahead of their release, but the news that Apple is going to be incorporating Scripture lookup directly into Spotlight has us scrambling a bit. We're currently working on a feature for Accordance 9 which would utilize iCal syncing to automatically present you with verses appropriate to the current holiday or special event. For example, if you launch Accordance on the fourth Thursday of November, a Holiday Verses window will open listing every verse containing the word "thanksgiving." ...
