Verses? We Don't Need No Stinking Verses!

September 29, 2009 - David Lang — When I was a teenager attempting to read the Bible for the first time, it was unlike any other book I had ever read. Yes, reading the Bible for myself was uniquely life-changing, but I'm referring to a distinctive which is much more prosaic and practical. Reading the Bible was unlike reading any other book not just because of its content, but because of the way it was laid out. In no other book that I had read to that point was each sentence (sometimes even the briefest parts of a sentence) divided up into separate chunks and numbered for easy ...

Burning Ears: more blogs about Accordance

September 28, 2009 - Helen Brown — Dr. Joel Willitts of the Euangelion blog discusses the value of our many tagged texts on Accordance and Me, Part 5: Using Accordance for Research, while over at for the Sake of Truth Josh Mann tells his readers What I Love About Accordance. Way to go, guys! We don't mind how much our ears burn as long as our users are satisfied with Accordance and telling others about it. If you are not satisfied, we also want to hear about it, preferably directly or on the Forums where we can respond promptly to your concerns.

Sunday's Guest Preacher

September 25, 2009 - David Lang — This past Sunday morning, my family and I didn't make it to church. Yes, I forgot to set the alarm and my wife and I slept late. We decided therefore to have church at home. iTunes provided the worship music, and Accordance provided the preacher: I read from Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. Why would I read the quintessential "hellfire and brimstone" sermon to my wife and children? My oldest son had recently read it for school, and when I asked him what he thought of it, his response was: "Well, Dad, it ...

Odds and Ends

September 24, 2009 - David Lang — Yesterday I posted a link to the TUAW review of Accordance. A blog focused on all things Apple, it has an audience with a wide range of religious and non-religious views, and that showed in the comments on the TUAW review. But amid all the noise several users voiced their personal enthusiasm for Accordance. One even gave his own excellent comparative review. Be sure to check it out. By the way, the author of the TUAW review lamented the poor signal-to-noise ratio of the comments his Bible software reviews have received, and I told him we got ...

TUAW Reviews Accordance

September 23, 2009 - David Lang — The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) has posted an excellent review of Accordance, emphasizing that many students of the Bible have actually switched to the Mac just to be able to use it. Be sure to check it out, including the always entertaining discussions in the comments!

Zondervan Partners with Accordance . . . in 1999!

September 22, 2009 - David Lang — Today Zondervan announced that it is discontinuing its Pradis Bible Software for Windows and will be licensing its materials to other Windows Bible software developers. This is a major shift in policy and welcome news for Windows users who did not want to use a separate Bible program exclusively for Zondervan content. The first of Zondervan's new partners is naturally and excitedly publicizing this long-awaited change, and some people may be getting the mistaken impression that this product has somehow replaced Pradis as the exclusive platform ...

Reminiscin’

September 21, 2009 - David Lang — Dr. Joel Willitts of the Euangelion blog has been writing a series of posts entitled "Accordance and Me," in which he recounts his personal experiences with Accordance. In part 1, he describes his first exposure to Accordance at Dallas Theological Seminary, including its enthusiastic recommendation by the late Dr. Harold Hoehner. (See this post for my own reflections on Dr. Hoehner's remarkable support of Accordance.) In Accordance and Me, part 2, Dr. Willitts describes his experience of using Accordance with the PC emulator prior to ...

Accordance's Unsung Feature: It Just Works

September 18, 2009 - David Lang — I never cease to be amazed at the hassles some people are willing to put up with where computers and computer software are concerned. For years Mac users have been telling their Windows-using brethren that "Macs Just Work," that they aren't prone to all the instability and malware that most computer users assume is just par for the course. The same is true of Accordance. Where other Mac Bible software programs have sometimes left their users dealing with major headaches and broken functionality, Accordance users have happily been uninterrupted ...

Another Week, Another Update

September 17, 2009 - David Lang — Two weeks ago, we released a free update to Accordance 8.3 with a ridiculous number of new features. A week later we released 8.3.1 to fix several bugs. Now, a week after that, we're announcing the release of Accordance 8.3.2, another minor bug-fix update. What's the deal with all these bug-fix releases? Are we having trouble getting our act together? Not at all. Each of these updates is actually a testament to how quickly we respond to reported problems. The release of 8.3 came at about the same time Apple released the new Snow Leopard ...

Tip: Open more than one Scripture link

September 16, 2009 - David Lang — When you're looking at a string of hypertexted Scripture links in a tool, such as a series of cross references to a verse, you can preview each link in the Instant Details box simply by dragging your cursor over the link. You can also click each link to view it in a separate window or tab. But what if you want to view all those passages at one time? There are actually two ways to do this. You can select more than one Scripture link to view by starting your selection in the middle of the first link and ending your selection in the middle of ...

Forget that Stack of Books

September 15, 2009 - David Lang — One of the most shocking things about seminary was the number of expensive books I had to buy—especially when it came to language study. I had taken Biblical Hebrew and Classical Greek in college, but somehow, none of the books I had bought in college would do for seminary. Instead of my inexpensive Hebrew Bible without apparatus, I was told I had to purchase a copy of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Instead of the Greek New Testament I had picked up in college, I needed to buy the current edition published by the United Bible Society. My ...

New in 8.3: Copy as Citation Improvements

September 11, 2009 - David Lang — Accordance's Copy as Citation feature is designed to let you copy verses out of Accordance in whatever format you desire. Want the text of the verses to appear as a continuous paragraph enclosed in quotation marks and followed by a parenthesized reference? Want the text to be pasted at a different font size than you view it within Accordance? Want the reference to appear above the text and followed by a colon? All of these combinations and more can be set in the Citation preferences. The nice thing about this is that it saves you from ...

Squish! Accordance 8.3.1 Squashes Bugs

September 09, 2009 - David Lang — Just as you're settling into a new Accordance update, here we come with another one. Last week we released Accordance 8.3 with lots of new features, enhancements, and yes, a few minor bugs. As those bugs have been reported, our programmers have been hard at work squashing them. Accordance 8.3.1 is therefore now available for download. Whether or not you've experienced any bugs in 8.3, you'll want to go ahead and download this latest version. And while this latest update is just a bug-fix release, there is one minor enhancement we left out of ...

New in 8.3: Copy as User Tool Link

September 08, 2009 - David Lang — One time-saving new feature in Accordance 8.3 is Copy as User Tool Link. User Tool links are links to other texts and tools which you can create from within an Accordance user tool. A user tool link is essentially a search, in which you tell Accordance what module to open, what field to search, and what to search for. So, for example, if I wanted to link to BDAG's article on agapao, I would enter [BDAG, Greek Entry, agapaw] in a user tool edit window and then format the whole thing as a hypertext link. When I update the tool, I'll have a ...

New in 8.3: Changing the Resource in a Pane

September 04, 2009 - David Lang — Yesterday, I announced the release of Accordance 8.3, which can be freely downloaded here. I also told you about a few of the many cool new features. Here's another one I know you're gonna like. For some time now, you could use keyboard shortcuts to change the main search text in a Search window. Pressing control-plus or minus would change the search text and corresponding text pane to the next or previous text in the list. You could also use control-1 through control-0 to pull up one of the first ten Bibles in the list. That was cool, and ...

Accordance 8.3 Available for Download

September 03, 2009 - David Lang — I'm very pleased to announce the release of Accordance 8.3, a free update for all users of Accordance 8. When we announced this release on Twitter last night, we remarked that this update contains a "ridiculous number of new features." As you can see from the list of new features here, that wasn't marketing hype. Be sure to see the full list and download the upgrade, and check back here for upcoming posts about these new features. For now, I'll just highlight a few of my favorites. Extensive use of Help Tags: Help tags are those little ...
