Thanks for this; it is so true and so helpful. I do hope that lots of users who are considering learning Hebrew see it. I know very little Hebrew but the little I know l learnt from this book. I had recommneded several times on the Forums but with no response. That could be for many reasons! But I felt a little embarrassed that I was recomending such a 'simple' book which might be somewhat frowned upon by the real scholars! I am delighted to see that there is now an Accordance version and that you are highly recommending it. Thanks again,

It was the perfect time to buy the UBS-4 with the apparatus and work on my textual criticism skills. The fact that you can hover over the manuscripts for instant details is a lifesaver, and it encourages me to make more use of the apparatus that a print version just wouldn't. I also purchased Metzger's Textual Commentary now that it was on sale. The price dropped to something more affordable for a poor preacher like me. :) Keep up the great work!

Darin Allen

I should have mentioned, for the sake of this exercise you can also assume that you also get English, Greek, and Hebrew Bible modules that don't count towards your three desert island total.
We do try to price our products competitively, but I realize that we won't be able to meet everyone's needs. We are not trying to compete on the same level as an e-bookstore or free Bible software programs. Our developers spend a considerable amount of time adding multiple search layers and advanced tagging to our resources. As a result, Accordance modules offer much more functionality than a simple ebook, and they are priced to reflect the amount of time and resources that went into creating them.

If you are looking for lower-priced options, it doesn't get any better than free, and we do offer a free app for the iPone and iPad that includes a tagged ESV Bible and many other free resources. We also offer a free trial of our Mac program at http://accordancebible.com/trial. I hope you'll give us further consideration, and wish you all the best in your studies.

Aaron

It's greedy to want to get paid for your hard work?
You *have* read the Scriptures, haven't you Rod?

You know... the parts where it says "The laborer is worthy of his wages" and "You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain."

I honestly don't know what the Accordance folks would say to something like this... but rather than accuse them of greed, why don't you ask them if they have a way of working with you on purchasing the product?

Since you're looking at Accordance, it's probably safe to assume you're a Mac user already. And if you compare the price of Accordance to that of their familiar competition... I think it's *very* reasonably priced for a comparable package.

We take image quality very seriously. We standardized the size of the images in our edition at around 1500 x 1000, which is smaller than the jpegs on the original DVDs but significantly larger than the images in the PowerPoint documents. We used roughly the same degree of compression as the originals, so did not introduce any additional artifacts.

With respect to getting the images out of Accordance, I saw no loss in quality using either copy/paste or Save as Jpeg.

As for the value of the Accordance edition, I think you'll find that Accordance makes it extremely easy to browse and search the entire collection. The text of each PowerPoint slide description is included with each image, so you can easily find images by a variety of search criteria, or just browse the photos and read about what you're looking at.

Hope this helps.

Jim

I have been looking forward to the integration of bibleplaces-material in accordance, but must say that I am skeptical of this release:

1) The standard edition of these images is delivered on 2 DVDS - this release is 1.4 GBs. This makes it sound as if much picture quality was lost in this process, even if taking into account any included powerpoints on the dvds.

2) When you save one of these pictures from acc. will it then save the original JPEG file or would it be a "remade" and re-compressed picture with additional artifacts?

Considering that the acc. edition is 50$ more than the raw images, this would be a really steep price just for the convenience of having them in accordance,if it also comes with these problems.

David Lang

Jim, what you're seeing is the BHSD, a demo version of the BHS which we include free with the iPhone and which only includes Genesis 1-3. Your insisting on the "rightness" of the existing syntax is misplaced. What matters is what your users expect and want to use. So, commit to the syntax already. By all means make it a preference, because lots of users are used to the existing syntax. But for a large percentage of searches, the Google syntax is faster, easier, and is known by almost everyone on the planet by now. Why force users to learn a new syntax when it's not necessary?

john

I think its right to cater for the Google generation, because that's what we are and that's what we expect. It's not about right and wrong and better and worse, its about what we're used to.

Now the trouble is, this Accordance hack is not the right way to go about it. If I search for Son of Adam, Accordance still gives me Lk 3:38, but the Google generation expect to get Ge 4:25 and 5:3 as well, unless it is in double quotes.

I think you need to actually provide two full blown different parsing regimes, switchable in preferences - the Google one, and the one you like. Personally I want the Google one, because I do so many Google searches, this is just how I think now.

As we improve upon this feature we'll see if there is anything that can be done on our end to support Pages as well.

As we've said many times here and in other places, Mellel is our Mac word processor of choice. It is very inexpensive, and is the only one which properly handles RTL scripts (Hebrew, etc.).

And for images, we can't post these on every page, but there are well-illustrated pages in the About Accordance section: Introduction and Features.

Even the page on new features in version 8 is illustrated.

I agree that the training DVD videos show version 7, though everything is still applicable except the Arrange Modules window (which is now the Library window).

David illustrates his posts when there is something specific to show, but I think pictures and videos of the program are readily available around the site.

Good point(s), David. Although I think "happy" may be an understatement for some…as you can see from the first comment!

David Lang

Vince, I appreciate your opinion that an electronic book should never be more expensive than a printed copy. For those operating on that premise, there's little I can say to defend the price of the Accordance ESV Study Bible. All I can do is respectfully suggest that there are other premises which need to be considered. Here are a few:

1. The list price for a hardbound ESV Study Bible from Amazon is $40. $32 is the discounted price. $70/$40 is our list price, and we offer discounts too.

2. Different print editions of the ESV Study Bible cost more than the hardback edition; in some cases, much more.

3. If you already paid for a nice, leatherbound edition of the ESV, and now you want a nice leatherbound edition of the ESV Study Bible, you have to pay for the translation all over again . . . the bookstore won't give you credit for the translation you already purchased. We do. And, as Rick pointed out, most of our existing users who want the ESV Study Bible already have the ESV, so they only pay $40.

4. Why must a physical book always cost more than an electronic book, when additional development costs went into the creation of the electronic book? It's easy to say that the more ephemeral version of the book should cost less, but that assumes that the only production costs which need to be recouped are the costs of creating and distributing the physical product. It's like saying that a dinner at a fancy steakhouse should always cost less than a meal at an all-you-can-eat buffet, since you get more food at the buffet. But food quantity is not the only factor which determines price, or value. Neither, I would submit, are the costs of the physical medium the only factor which determines the value of an electronic book versus a print one.

5. Our pricing is consistent with other software developers who are offering the ESV Study Bible notes for $50 without the translation, and we have had no complaints from our users, who have been happy to get an Accordance version of this resource so soon after its release in print.

Ultimately, we do our best to offer the best electronic resources at an affordable price, while also being able to pay royalties and recoup our development costs. As you'll see from my A-Team post, most of the revenue we receive gets sunk right back into development, and that ultimately benefits our users even further.

I hope this helps.

Vince

A point is being missed, but I don't it's Thomas that's doing the missing.

The price of the ESV Study *Bible* for Accordance is $70. The price of a hardbound printed copy of the ESV Study *Bible* is, as Thomas indicated, around $35 or less. Thus, the price of the Accordance electronic copy is over twice the price of the printed copy. That is ... overpriced. IMO, an electronic copy of a book (any book) should never be more expensive than a printed copy, much less twice as expensive.

Rick Bennett

Thomas,

You are missing the point here. The number of customers who already own the ESV, or ESVS is very high. Every customer who purchases the Library 8 Standard or Premier level receives the ESVS. In addition, every package level starting at $99 includes the choice of one or more Bible unlocks of choice – including the ESV.
Thus, a very large number of customers interested in the ESVSB already own the ESV text, making $40 (less applicable discounts) a very fair price. It is also likely that a number of customers will want to use the Notes in coordination with a translation other than the ESV.
