Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar Typeface

Greetings,

Working on a Hebrew problem today, I realized why Gesenius' grammar has been less helpful than I originally thought it would be. After struggling with understanding a section, I gave in and reached for my printed edition.

That's when I noticed the difference. The definitions to Hebrew words (and other emphasized texts) in the printed edition are in italics. In the Accordance edition, the definitions are regular type, and thus, blend into the description. The printed edition is much easier to read because you know exactly when the author is providing a definition.

Is there any way that the italics from the printed edition could be added to the Accordance edition?

As a example of the problem, can you guess (on first glance) when the translations begin and end? From section 152u "but probably עצר is only an intrusion from 29:12, and we should read עצר without any one‘s restraining them; in 29:12 translate the fatherless and him that had none to help him; in Ps 72:12 ואין–ע is used in the same sense)"

You can tell in an instant in the printed edition.

I love Accordance, but this change would make Gesenius much more accessible and enjoyable.

Thanks for the consideration!

I recently visited the Concordia Publishing House website and discovered that they have finally, after many years, produced a DVD of Luther's Works that will run on a Mac, and they have reduced the price at the same time to an almost affordable $150.

I was wondering if you have any plans to market an Accordance module of the same ilk, because i would much rather keep all my reference materials under one roof and have the convenience of running it with your magnificent application program.

God bless you and your "house".

Using Commentaries Electronically

One of the big decisions that will drive my choice for buying Bible software will be the prospect of reading commentaries electronically. Most of the pastors that I have talked to say that they prefer having electronic copies of things like lexicons but print copies of commentaries.

Does anybody have any insight into using commentaries electronically vs. hardcopies. Has anyone tried making pdf's of commentaries and converting them to a kindle format? How about the ipad app? How do you feel about it being more expensive to get an electronic copy through accordance vs a print copy through amazon?

Any insight would be great. Thanks.

Hey, all –

I don't expect any tool, text, or version to be perfect – judgment calls must be made by editors & translators. However, one of the professors I had for Greek preferred Middle Liddell/Big Liddell over BDAG because he felt that BDAG had already made some theological decisions for us. (He has since moved on to another school.) Your thoughts?

New World Translation

Of course I've invited a couple of JW's into my home to do bible study, as I love studying the bible. The first time they came, we couldn't even get past the first page of there book entitled, "What does the Bible Really Teach?" as they were telling me stuff that wasn't in the bible. So I invited them back for another "study session". Only this time, I plugged my mac up to a 50" plasma and we all followed along with a few scripture versions side by side in Accordance. Needless to say, they were impressed as I dug deeper into the greek and the Hebrew of certain words, but then the inevitable question was asked:

"Is there a NWT module for that software? At first I wanted to say, of course there isn't. Why would there be? But now I wish that there were so that they could see what I already know about the NWT.

So... will there ever be a NWT module for Accordance, I didn't see one in the online store....

Thanks,

Verse vs. Word highlighting

David's recent blog posts on highlighting have been extremely welcome, as highlighting is an easily overlooked yet powerful feature in day-to-day use of Accordance. Thanks, David!

I made a comment on one of the posts about the difference between word and verse highlighting, and I want to continue the discussion here, if I may. Somehow long ago, I gained the impression that word highlights do not persist through module upgrades, but verse highlights do. This permanency would be, obviously, important to keep in mind when choosing whether to highlight a verse or a word.

David generously ran a test, upgrading a module, to see if word highlights were lost. They were not, so perhaps I was wrong - and it is very welcome news indeed that word highlights persist.

However, over time, I have noticed that my experience is more complicated than this. For example, I'm attaching a screenshot of some highlights I made a few years ago in Colossians, when I was using the NAS95S text. I've also posted the screenshot here:
http://kvmagruder.net/word-highlighting.jpg

At this time, I was using a highlight set designed for word highlighting, including "critical word," "repeated words," "hapax," etc., as well as some more general labels such as "research later," "compare versions," "cf. Dictionaries," etc.

Note, however, that over the last couple of years of updates of this module, that the highlights have shifted throughout the passage by a word or two, or at least by several letters. For example, "all things" should be highlighted in the same pinkish color in vs. 17, but as the screenshot shows, it has shifted.

So this level of drift, I guess, is to be expected, as the modules change. So maybe it's more accurate to characterize word highlighting as semi-permanent - persisting through updates but drifting, rather than remaining stable.

So... given the advantages of word highlighting, would anyone care to discuss possible strategies for mitigating and reducing drifting word highlights?

PEACE

Dear Accordance staff, thanks in advance for your assistance with this inquiry:

I've noted the 2009 posts in the "General Accordance Topics" forum area regarding "The Norman L. Geisler Apologetics Library," but prior to placing a purchase, I wanted to be certain that a "Feature or Module Request" forum post and inquiry on this product made its way to your staff-is it likely that this product will be available in Accordance?

Thanks again for your feedback and guidance on this inquiry!

Searching OT-frequency and book-frequency at the same time

(Hello again. Thank you for all your help!)

I'd like to search for words that occur between 75-100 times (in the Old Testament) in Ezekiel, but only the ones that occur more than 5 times in Ezekiel itself. Is there a way to search this directly, or do I just need to analyze the 75-100 words and sort by "count down"?
Thank you!

Seeking Accordance Software Tutor

Greetings Accordance Community,

First, I must say that I am so very grateful for all of the training resources currently offered by Accordance staff, both online and via seminar. That said, in keeping with the profound blessing that I've experienced throughout one-to-one discipleship in other areas of life, I am seeking to maximize too my skills and efficiency in regard to my Accordance software investment in order that I might be a worker "who correctly handles the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15) and that I might more ably serve others in extending this Word of Life (1 John 1:1). I am expecting to compensate for this service, and am willing to pursue this instruction via the internet (e.g. Skype, etc.), though I would be especially interested in local sessions (my wife and I currently reside north of Boston, in South Hamilton, MA USA).

If any member of the Accordance community is so equipped and prayerfully willing, please reply to this post and I will follow-up as soon as possible-and thanks in advance for your consideration!

Grace and truth in Christ,

Bookmarks - and synchronization issues

Hi there,

I just started using accordance software, because it was recommended to me. So far I like most of it. I am using it on my MacBook as well as on my mobile devices (iPad). Actually I would like to use it on my iMac as well, but obviously the number of computers that can be synchronized with the mobile device is restricted to one only and there seems to be now way to synchronize my MacBook with my iMac. It would be very nice to see a change there.

But my more important request:

I am using my iPad for my daily bible-reading. I have my own reading plan, I do read some chapters in the old Testament, some in the gospels and the book of acts and some in the epistles. Additionally I read one chapter continuously, as this is the chapter we read as whole church.
So it may be obvious that I need to have something like bookmarks to keep track.

On my iPad I also have anther bible program installed (that synchronizes well with several platforms, cause it is done through a server) and there I can use bookmarks.

As I really would love to move to one place for all my needs I have to wait for the bookmark feature. As long, as this is not there, I have to switch between programs.

I really like the user tools. I can use it for my sermons. It would be nice to have additional formatting options like tables. But at least there are some basic formatting tools and I appreciate that.

So are bookmarks to come? And is there a workaround for synchronizing between MacBook and iMac somehow?

Megablessings
