converting fonts to Unicode

Hello all,

 

I'm trying to convert documents using non-unicode fonts (BWGRKL and SPHEBREW) to unicode. Anyone know the best way to do this?

Are these documents predominantly in those fonts or mostly some other modern language with occasional citations of the Greek or Hebrew?

 

If the former, your best bet is to write a conversion script or macro (Perl or Python are probably good language choices) that can map the proprietary encoding(s) to Unicode. This will be a fairly time-consuming challenge.

 

If the latter, I'd copy and paste Unicode (for text available in Accordance) or manually rekey.

 

There's an online converter for some Greek encodings but not for the SP fonts.

Ok, here's the story. I have an Excel (Numbers) file with over 1000 Greek (all words occurring 10 or more times in the text). In the left column are the greek words (in BWGRKL font), in the right column are the corresponding English definitions. This is data I created for an old flashcard program I used on my PocketPC.

 

Now I have an iPhone. There is a fantastic program called StudyCards that accepts unicode Greek. What I'd love to do is somehow convert those 1000+ words from BWGRKL font to unicode (Greek Polytonic). I don't really want to retype them all over again.

 

I haven't come across someone who knows how to do this conversion.. but you metioned copy and pasting Unicode. For example, I could copy/paste the lexical forms of all these words from Accordance BDAG. How would I do that, seeing as Accordance isn't unicode?

You can export Greek/Hebrew in Unicode. I wouldn't quite say, "Accordance isn't unicode." However, there should be an easier way to accomplish this. I've seen some programs that run a Unicode conversion for Word docs, but not sure about spreadsheets.

Cool. Once I checked 'Unicode Export, it was really easy. The "export" process sounded laborious, but it's as easy as copy/paste. Great. 1000 words won't take too long.

 

Yeah, and I did find that some people had created Word macros for the BWGRKL to Unicode conversion. I tried it on my old laptop running Word. It didn't work, which then brought back a lot of bad PC memories, and made me think I'd probably have more success typing it out with my forehead.

 

No offense on the "Accordance isn't unicode" comment. I should've preempted all remarks by saying that I barely have any idea what I'm talking about here.
