Product reviews

There is one thing I find lacking between the Accordance store and Accordance forum: a good review of each single product on sale.

The Accordance store has (often) just a small not-so-attractive picture that doesn't give me any insight into the resource. Description are not detailed enough, in my opinion.

The Accordance forum is not filled with user reviews, my fault too, but I don't find a easy way to post reviews, or discuss products.

What can we do, as (em)power(ed) user?

You are most welcome to post a review on the Store pages. You can also click on the screenshot to see the window at full size. We try to take a representative shot but it's not easy on big complex modules.

Dav Francis has posted some very thorough reviews on the NIB family of products.

I frequently check the Amazon and christianbook.com reviews, too. For commentaries, bestcommentaries.com is a good place to go. When in doubt, I email a knowledgeable friend with the same theological perspective I have, or just ask on the forums for advice. We all, however, need to be posting reviews of favorite modules, what we like about them as well as their shortcomings (usually the problem of the resource itself, not anything the Accordance folks did). For those of us with limited financial resources, we want to get the most bang for our buck, and good reviews enable us to spend more wisely.

I find I don't know exactly how to explain why I like a resource, and I don't check what I own, but what I wish to buy.

Do you think, Helen, there is a way to help me/us to post more reviews? Some practical reviews, like the JBL blog post linked in te JBL page?

We give you the option to post a review on any product page. We do encourage you to post reviews, but what more do you want?

Not to fault anyone, especially Serp. who does not feel he can express what he likes about a product. But as the old saying goes it is always easier to curse the darkness than to light a lamp. I am guilty as anyone not avidly reviewing the numerous modules i own in Accordance, I am attempting to rectify that slowly.

The problem is I don't know what I want. I wish truly to know how to review modules, in a way that shows how crafted, clear they are.

But I can think only of "wow, this book was great."

I am sorry about it

One thing to do might be to organize a quick list, why am i using resource a and not b... How has this resource helped me better understand the text. and there is nothing wrong with a WOW, although perhaps, "Wow, this book left me feeling nourished as it help me understand better the grace of God." Sometimes that kind of a recommendation can be very helpful.

Not to sound "materialistic", but what about a 5% discount for a 10 reviews, quality and meaningful reviews?

“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;”

(1 Peter 5:1–2 NIV11)

[Please note this is a very tongue in check rebuke, good idea, but we as Christians have our own reward for doing good]

Hi Serpentium,

Ok, so I never review anything much really though if asked and I think I have anything to say I'll offer it, heavily laced with caveats.

But in the spirit of well-perhaps-I-could-give-a-bit-back-and-it-wouldnt-kill-me I wrote a review of a work I use frequently and posted it. Please see http://www.accordancebible.com/store/details/?&pid=Mounce+Morphology. Now I do not know whether you are interested in this work or not, but the point of the exercise was to present an honest review that tries to describe the work, the benefits of having it in Accordance, and the things missing or not so satisfactory. If you look over it does it look like the kind of review you are interested in seeing. Does it miss things you would like to see ? Does it answer questions you have or does it feel inadequate. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I have kids :) Seriously is this the sort of information you want ?

And if it is, know that it took me some effort to write, and that's with a resource I am familiar with. I am not about to do a lot of this. Too much else on like so many of us.

BTW, there is a forum category for reviews but honestly having the reviews with the items is what people are used to on the web. And if you have specific questions about a resource you are interested in people here will answer questions 'til the cows have not only come home, but are snuggled up with a cocoa and a good book in the back of the barn.

thx

D

If everyone write this kind of review, I'm going to buy all modules from Accordance.

Great review, thx.

Thanks for that review, Daniel. I do hope that others follow suit and add to the community's experience in this way.

One thing that also stood out to me is that this resource was developed a long time ago (probably close to 10 years), which I think is a testimony to the quality of our resources. Can you say this about an ePub or other electronic format from 10 years ago, if they existed?

@Serpentium : welcome. I doubt I would attempt to write something like that on a large work like Anchor or ISBE myself. Hard to do it justice.

@Abram : thanx.

@ Rick : welcome. I think you guys at OakTree have worked out how to use these sorts of items for study. And your model works well. But what its interesting is that the bible software publisher are also derivative work publishers. They (you guys, Logos, OT etc) have to add information to the etexts to enable many of the features my review talks about. I rather long for a day where one might be able to get book publishers to provide a lot of that data in a general fashion, so that books might be interoperable. (That's why I find TEI and OpenText interesting). But given the skills required are currently uncommon in general publishing, and likely to stay that way I suspect, I rather doubt that will happen. Of course, there are many problems with my fantasy from a practical standpoint like making enough money to stay in business.

In the meantime I'm grateful for Accordance, which I use every day.

thx

D
