One program feature I would like to see in the future is the ability to see which installed modules have upgrades/updates available. It could be something like a software updates menu item that compares installed modules against an online database of current versions. This could also apply to updating the program too. Shaun Walker Posted February 13, 2006 Share Posted February 13, 2006 I would like to add my vote to this request as well. I find it hard to keep up on module updates on my own. There are revisions of a module posted occasionally from 1.x to 1.xx. I only learn of these updates by being proactive in checking the Accordance website with realitive frequency and thorough diligence. I love the care Accordance gives to its modules, but a software update feature that looks for new versions of the Accordance program as well as updates to the modules one has would be great. Perhaps you could set the program to check weekly for program updates (or whatever frequency you wish - monthly perhaps?) when Accordance starts up (it would only check when the computer has an internet connection). You could also have this be set to manual only via a menu command. Then another option would be called up by the user to "check for module updates" since this might take longer because of the vast number of modules it would need check. If there is a module update, it would be wonderful if you could download the update from inside Accordance. If you would need to pay for the updated module or Accordance upgrade, give users who have an online account to the Accordance web site the option to do it that way. Some modules might be too big for some to download (i.e. dialup) but there are so many users with broadband that I feel would greatly benefit from knowing they've got the latest of their favorite and best Bible program! We only post module updates when they are both important and unlikely to be released on a CD-ROM soon. The News page keeps all update notices so that you can review them from time to time, and our sales staff are always happy to help you. If you stay current with our news, download the posted installers, and update your CD-ROMs as we release them, you will be current. We are reluctant to get involved with checks on Internet. Also do you really want to be informed that module x was updated on a CD-ROM collection that you do not own and are unlikely to buy, when you will probably get the update in time on your own collection? If we do automatic checks, they will not distinguish between minor and significant upgrades, nor between individual modules and collections. I don't always remember to check the News page for updates, and the last time I did, I had difficulty even knowing what version of the listed modules I had! Collections are indeed a more affordable way to purchase modules, but I don't think that the fact a module is in a collection should impede Accordance's desire or ability to inform customers of an update. I would like to see the modules more easily available online anyway. If more modules were downloadable, it would be easier for Accordance (the company) to update them when needed, and hence it would be easier for customers to update them as well. If automation is not at all possible, at least label our modules so we know what versions we have! I'm not a programmer, so I don't know the requirements, but it seems that a version resource could be added to each module so we'd know what we have. (I know resources don't exist anymore under OS X, but other items in my Finder have versions listed so there must be something that states the version. Considering that the release is not an update or a new edition of the ABD. Shouldn't we receive such an upgrade for free? "corrigenda" shouldn't be charged... Helen Brown Posted February 20, 2006 Share Posted February 20, 2006 In the case of ABD we fixed a very few formatting errors, but we updated the installer so that it comes with version 6. We did not push it as an upgrade for those who have slightly older versions. I do not think it is unreasonable for us to ask users to pay $10 to help cover the costs of remastering and producing new CD-ROMs. We rarely charge for upgrading the modules themselves, only when it is a major new release that involves redoing the entire module or paying additional royalties.
