"Attach Texts"/BHS/BHQ Questions

1. Looks like I cannot attach BHQ to BHS-T, as it is said here. The correct expression seem to be attach BHS-T to BHQ.

"Attach Hebrew Text" is not applicable with BHS-T:

 

2. If attach BHS-T to BHQ, when I am in BHQ text, ⌘+4 searches in the BHQ. But BHQ is incomplete. I do not want to search in BHQ. Therefore, ⌘+4 is kind of useless in this case before BHQ is complete.

 

3. I have to set a text other than BHS-T or BHQ in order to attach a text to either. This might cause a problem, if the verse number system is different, Accordance might not be able to show the verses that are not in the search text. (Is there any tagged English Bible whose verse number system is the same as the BHS/BHQ?)

 

4. This is not an "Attach texts" problem. Looks like that the BHQ does not have the textual notes. Therefore, if I want to see both the Masorah notes and the textual notes, I have to open both BHS-T and BHQ. Or there is a BHQ with textual notes?

Martin, I don't believe you are trying to use the Attach texts properly. Combining two texts (or tools for that matter) is used when you have a parallel pane that doesn't fully span the corpus of your primary search text. For instance, if working in a modern text, you may want to have one pane show both HMT for old testament and GNT for new. Or, perhaps you are working with an apocrypha, and you want ESV for the non-apocryphal text, but the NRSV for the apocrypha. Or, as in your example, you may want to show the BHQ in parallel when working with texts present in the BHQ, but you may want to add another text on top of that (BHS-T) when not in the relevant BHQ texts.

 

However, we only allow you to attach texts where it 'makes sense'. That is, if you are only ever displaying texts in the BHS-T, attaching another text to a BHS-T pane wouldn't make any sense, as those verses wouldn't be displayed anyway. Or, if you are in a modern text, attaching BHQ to BHS-T doesn't make sense, as it doesn't add anything.

 

In your case, I'm not really following why you want to attach a BHQ to a BHS-T. If you simply want to compare the two, or have access to the Masora notes, why not simply open the both as separate parallel panes?

 

Perhaps if you explain better what you are trying to accomplish, I can give better recommendations, but from what I can tell, Attach Texts isn't working as you expect, because it does something different from what you expect.

 

 

The JPS translation should use the same verse numbering as the BHS-T, but I don't think using the JPS will solve your issues, though it is a wonderful translation into English.

 

The BHQ is currently not tagged with anything, including apparatus markers or morphological (or syntactical) data. I'm not involved in working on the BHQ, but my guess is that these won't be completed until the text itself is completed. As you noted, you'll need to use the BHS-T for that any of the tagging.

What I wanted is to have a text with the Masorah notes as well as the Apparatus. If the BHQ is tagged and complete, it would be perfect. At this moment, I still want to attach the BHS-T to BHQ, but wish "⌘+4" would search in BHS-T rather than in BHQ.

 

My 1st point is to say that the wording on Accordance website is misleading:

Attach a partial Hebrew text (e.g. BHQ) to a complete Hebrew text (e.g. BHS-T). This will display the BHQ for any verses available in this text and then switch to the BHS-T when you navigate to a verse not contained in the BHQ.

I understand the concept.

 

But just as you said,

attaching BHQ to BHS-T doesn't make sense, as it doesn't add anything.

 

 

Technically on Accordance, it is to attach a BHS-T to BHQ. That's the only thing I wanted to say.

 

 

My 2nd-4th points are just saying that it seems to me there is no way to have one complete text that has both the Masorah notes and the textual notes, which I want. 2nd-4th points describes what problems I encountered when I try to devote only one pane to partially achieve my goal.

 

I tried to avoid devoting two pane to achieve the purpose.

As you can see the screenshot below, this is the best layout for me for Hebrew reading. I do not want to waste a pane for another Hebrew text if not necessary.

 

 

Edit: the JPS looks nice. But I'm not sure I whether I should buy it or not. My desire is to advance biblical training in Chinese. Having another English Bible does not help much if my main purpose is to help Chinese people do biblical study without using English Bible. Therefore, having another English Bible is like having another German/French Bible for English speaking people. I may get the JPS for my own research. I just feel sad that it cannot help people who do not use English.
