NIV 2011

As many of you are no doubt aware, there is a new NIV coming out in 2011.

My question is NOT whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. So, please start a different thread if you'd like to discuss the merits of the new (2010) NIV vs. the old (1984) NIV.

My question is this: when the new NIV comes out, how does this affect my everyday use of the old NIV?

1) Can I still copy passages from the (1984) NIV in Accordance and put them in my church bulletin (legally)?

2) Will Accordance continue to offer the old NIV. Or will the old NIV be phased out?

What other questions should I add here? In what ways will the publishing of the new NIV affect my use of the old NIV?

Since the NIV 2010 is already online, I thought this might be a good time to ask these sorts of questions.

Steve,

As I understand it, once the NIV 2011 is out, that will become our NIV module and we will no longer be able to sell the 1984 edition. For those who already own the 1984 NIV, I believe we will be permitted to offer the ability to keep a differently named module of the 1984 edition (NIV84?). We're still working on the details, but I believe those who already own the NIV will have the ability to compare the 1984 and 2011 editions. Those who buy the NIV after the 2011 edition is released will only receive the new edition.

Whoah, that's a substantial and far-reaching statement. Will I still be able to copy sections from the (1984) NIV from Accordance and print them in my bible studies and in my church bulletins?

This is the way Zondervan (and maybe others) works. They do this to promote the new edition and to keep from having to print different editions of the NIV. Same thing happened with the NASB. You'll have a hard time finding pre 1995 updates of the NASB too. It's not about what Accordance whats but what the publisher makes them do.

Hmm, I apologize if what's being communicated is that I'm blaming Accordance for what Zondervan is doing. I don't mean to say anything like that. I just want to know what I can and cannot do with the (1984) NIV within the constraints of the law. If the answer to that question is a big question mark, then, I'm content with that answer.

You can do the same things with the NIV84 that you have always been able to do. The new edition does not affect the rights and permissions for the previous edition.

Steve,

Rod is right that Zondervan will not be imposing any limitation on your use of the older edition you already own. They just don't want the previous edition to continue to be sold.

Just wondering if users will automatically be updated to the NIV 2011? Or will this need to be purchased anew?
