JonathanHuber
I turned off the pencil icon for creating a user note, but the area where the pencil would be is still active. If I move the cursor over to the right margin, it switches from the insertion point type of cursor to an arrow, and clicking in that blank space opens a user note editing window for whichever verse the cursor is adjacent to. 10.4, OS 10.9.2, 2012 macbook pro (non-retina)

Mark Allison
It's in your Accordance Preferences, in the "User Files" tab. Check "Hide Add User Note Pencil"
