How would you guys do this study

I want to study how to Biblically handle when a church split. I know is a broad subject. But how would I start a research into this subject, as Dr. J would put it, "in Accordance".

Heresy would be a good starting point (since it literally means foolish questions which is a source of so many splits)... Luke 12:51 may also be a good place to start. 1 Cor. 11:18f and Titus 3:10 would also be good places to look.

You might also look at the rift between Paul and Barnabas, and the whole question of the inclusion of the Gentiles and the resulting divisions in who followed what food rules (even though it wasn't a full fledged church split). Maybe even the agreement/division between Jacob and Laban in Genesis. [specific verse references left as an exercise for the reader ]

 

In terms of Accordance techniques, doing research searches on terms like "schism" "division" and the like would be one place to start. If it were me I would run separate Bible and Tools searches. Articles in the tools might lead to more scripture examples.

 

I would also probably use various cross reference tools in a parallel pane with my "starting" Scriptures to look for other connections.

I would run a research search on "division" on my topical resources. That should get you appropriate bible verses to get you started.

In my view of the historical reconstruction of Johannine literature, 1 John is targeting an audience who are the faithful yet defeated-feeling remnants of a church split. Many left. The audience of 1 John stayed. The author of 1 John told them that leaving your family shows that you don't know God's love.
