Verba, a free Latin dictionary app

The Latin Dictionary by Lewis and Short is probably the largest printed Latin-English dictionary that is available for sale. As the dictionary is more than a century old, the text itself is in the public domain.

The dictionary has been available for some time on the internet, thanks to the Perseus Digital Library. The link for on-line access is: Search

However, access to the on-line version can sometimes be very slow, either on the server or on the client side.

Now, it happens that the good Theophilus at retinenda.com has prepared the same Lewis-Short for download, together with a simple Macintosh interface that allows a user with a slow internet connection to keep the whole Lewis-Short on the desktop and search it for dictionary headwords.

The app supports search for truncated words: as the page the opens when you the start the application page explains, you will need to enter the symbol % for any letter or group of letters.

The download is available for free at retinenda.

This is a great for your together with Latin Accordance modules. Of course, it does not provide the same experience as an Accordance tools does, but it is still some much needed help.

Thanks, Theophilus!
