A little confused about different Hebrew texts

I’m a little confused by the variety of Hebrew Bible texts. I apparently have BHS-T and BHS-W4 installed. I seem to also have a syntax add-on for HMT-W4, but I don’t seem to have HMT-T or HMT-W4 installed. I see something in the store about an upgrade from BHS-W4 to HMT-W4. Can someone give me a quick rundown of the differences between these texts? Does it mainly have to do with cantillation marks and critical apparatus or is there more?

Hi Christopher. I am sure there will be more detailed answers but here are the basic concepts...

BHS-T - is the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia text, with morphological Tagging and apparatus of the BHS published text. You cannot display syntax information keyed to this text. This is a currently available text.

BHS-W4 is an old module that we haven't published for about 2 years or so now. It was the BHS text with the Westminster morphology, and with some textual emendations (to my understanding) from Groves. It has a partial and now unupdated Syntax file that used to be purchasable for it.

HMT-W4 is a free upgrade from BHS-W4 (though you have to "purchase" it and Easy Install it) and is the current text from Westminster-Groves, with full morphological tagging, cantillation, and a partial (purchasable and growing) syntax module. It has no apparatus. This is the other of our currently available Hebrew Bible texts.

We do also have some fascicles of BHQ (Biblia Hebraica Quinta) available with apparatus, but that is a slow work in progress with GBS.

Hope that helps

Thanks, Ken. So if I want the apparatus, I should use BHS-T, and if I want syntax, I should use HMT-W4?

Yep, that's correct. There are technical issues about how the apparatus messes up the text for alignment with the syntax trees that are out of my field, but I am assured are significant.

Remember the syntax trees are a separately purchased module, and do not come automatically with HMT-W4.

The HMT upgrade is free and available here,

and I just saw that the BHS-W4 syntax upgrade to HMT-W4 syntax is free too, and available here.
