Copying from OT Peshitta to Mellel

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to copy a verse from the OT Peshitta of Accordance 9.3.1 (=Syriac) to Mellel. After I paste, the text is illegible. I need the text to be in Unicode format so I can work with it on my PC. I checked the Accordance option "Export as Unicode". My Mac is running OS X 10.6.7 and I am a Mac newbie.

Thanx,

David

I have tested this. You do need to have a good copy of the font SyrCOMTalada which is installed with PESHNT-T. There is a bug in 9.3 that the verse references remain on the left even when you select the Right-to-Left direction for the paragraph. We'll need to fix that.

Many Thanks. Just to make sure: Once it is fixed, will the SyrComTalada be installed with the OT Peshitta as well? Or am I required to do something right now? Is the SyrComTalada a Unicode font?

Edit: Solved. Thank You.

I am having trouble with this again. In Mellel it looked fine. I exported from Mellel to PDF. When I copy from the PDF to MS Word on my PC some of the letters are not recognized (ש ד and others as well). Can I solve this somehow?

there is also this left to right problem: ושדר copied as רדשו...

Does this also apply to User Notes/Tools? Before the Peshitta for the OT came out I would type the Syriac into a User Note file using the Peshitta font. I used to be able to copy and past this text into a word processor without any problems. Then at some point I started having problems (I didn't take note of exactly when, but it may have been with the release of 9.3). The text would not longer copy over in the same font. The Peshitta font is more like the Estrangela script, but when I paste to a word processor (more recently Mellel) it changes to what looks more like the Nestorian script. It didn't always do this for Mellel (nor previous processors I've done this in; e.g., Pages), the problem seems to be more recent. The only thing I can think of that has changed is the version of Accordance I was using (i.e., I don't think it was from changing anything in Mellel or adding new fonts to my computer)

Anyway, I wanted to bring this up here cause I thought this might help clarify the problem in some way or surface a different one.

I have recently purchased the PESHNT-T module (among others) and use Mellel for PhD papers. Like yourself, I find the text illegible (like ASCII characters). I did load the SIL font 'SPEdessa', but again, only a few Aramaic letters are legible. Does anyone have any idea how to have text seamlessly present in Mellel. Does it perhaps mean one has to purchase a FONT in order to make it seamless?

I have just cut-and-pasted a section of text from 1 Peter into MS Word for Mac 2011 - viola! No problem.:-) Beautiful and seamless. I am intrigued to find a solution for Mellel.

The font you need is Estrangelo Talada, and you need to be exporting as Unicode. We are allowed to distribute this font with the Peshitta NT. I have just confirmed that the export to Mellel 2.9 works as well as it always did, i.e. perfectly.

Dear Helen,

Thank you for the reply. I am relatively new to Accordance, so have much to learn as a result. I will have to review 'Podcasts' and see if I can understand the relationship of 'Exporting' text into Mellel in Unicode with Accordance. My Mac FontBook does not have the Estrangelo Talada font you mentioned. Am I looking in the right place? Please send me the Estrangelo Talada font.

Pax,

Alistair

Dear Helen,

Thank you for sending the Estrangelo Talada font. First, I did as you said: to go into Accordance Preferences and change the settings to import Unicode in both Greek and Hebrew; then 'imported' the font into my Mac FontBook. With Mellel open, I was able to cut-and-pastor the Peshitta text (1 Pet. 1:3) into my Mellel paper without a flaw.

With gratitude, Canto alla vita! (I sing to life!)

Alistair
