Compare Texts

One of the things I find myself doing often is opening several English Bible versions to compare them. This often takes several steps. One feature (or maybe this is a training issue) that would be nice is if I could highlight a verse and click "Compare Texts" or something similar and get a new window with my 4-5 favorite same-language texts [edited - added from here to end of sentence] with the 'Compare Texts' feature turned on.

 

For example, let's say I'm reading the ESV in my regular workspace and I find a what I consider to be a strange English construction. I'd like to compare this version with the RSV, NIV, NASB, KJV, etc. Right now, I have to open each of these separately. However, if I could just highlight the verse in question and then click compare a new window could appear with all of my previously specified English texts. If I'm look at a Greek text and have a textual criticism question I could do the same and get a variety of Greek texts. Thus, the feature could be useful for comparing original language texts and translations.

I completely agree with Jeremy.

 

I have used the Online Bible for the Mac for many years and am currently using the OSX beta version. I have always enjoyed using the feature that allows you to compare several versions quickly. I open up a text, then hit command-y several times. Each time I do this it opens up the next English text Bible version in the order I have arranged them in my preferences. I then hit command-0 and they are lined up parallel to each other. So in less than 2 seconds I can immediately compare a verse in all my favorite versions.

 

This would be a great blessing if this feature was added to Accordance.

My suggestion for how to implement this would be to add a key combination that opens a new text pane. It could even be done smartly to open a new text pane using the next module on the list not already open in the window. In fact, that should be the default behavior when clicking on the icon as well. I've always thought it pointless that new text panes are opened to the same text again and again. Obvious, 99% of the time you're going to want a different text in each pane. There's no reason to leave the "Add new pane" routine to dumbly opening the same text already on display.

 

So, let this be a call for a key combination for "Add new text pane".

 

This is the type of customization I'd like to be able to add myself, with a little Applescript magic. This should work:

tell app "system events" to click button 7 of window 1

but the custom interface build of Accordance does not play right with apple event calls. This has made me sad for years.
