Weird "copy as Citation" behavior

I frequently get truncated or garbled text when I paste from Copy as Citation; never when pasting from Copy. For example:

 

Submit to one thera o out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:21)

and

You, my brothers and sisters, were But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. (Galatians 5:13)

[this leaves out "called to be free"]

This happens whether pasting in Pages, Mail, or Circus Ponies Notebook.

Any ideas?
