User Notes formatting not showing in 10.2.4

I'm having a hard time getting formatting like italics and quotation marks to work in my User Notes in 10.2.4. (iMac, early 2008 is what I'm on right now)

 

I enter, for example, a quotation mark, which I see in the edit window, but as soon as I type the next character, the quotation mark disappears. When I update/save, I still don't see it.

 

I also can't italicize any text.

 

(I'm using Helvetica 16 font, FWIW.)

 

I don't recall this issue before, but I still haven't used this particular computer a whole lot... maybe it's just me? Didn't see anything on the forums about this.

I've been creating and editing user notes extensively the past few days in 10.2.4rc1 (assuming it is the same as general release 10.2.4) and I haven't run into any problems. Quotation marks and italics work fine for me.

Just fine on 10.8.4 on my MacBook at home.
