Navigating ISBE

Recommended Posts

I'm still struggling to get my mind around much of the simple stuff in Accordance, like simple navigation.

I wanted to find the article in ISBE on the Epistles of John. I ended up scrolling until I found it. I could not get a search for "John, Epistles of" or anything else to take me there. How would someone who knows what he's doing do this? :)

Since you have to guess at the wording of this entry, and there are 48 entries for "john", I tried "john epistle*" and it worked.

Thank you, Helen, for trying to help me. I still don't understand where and how to do this. I'm sure it's just newbee-ishness. Please see screenshot.post-3736-0-01867400-1401456144_thumb.png

Hi, Eric!

Let me try to help. There is a Browser button at the top left of every tool window. Click on it to display the tool's table of contents. Click the disclosure triangles to see subsets of titles. Double-click on a title to jump directly to that article.

You can also search a tool by using its Search Entry Box. Select the Search Field (usually "title" or "entry") and type the word(s) you want to find. I usually start with a single word (e.g. "John"). If I get too many hits, I add words (e.g. "1 John," "Epistles of John," etc.). Click the Mark button in the navigation bar at the bottom of the pane to jump to the next hit word until you find what you want.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Dr. J. That does help a lot! I had no clue what the "Mk" button was (what you called "Mark button". I didn't realize the browser button was there to let me see a table of contents. I think my search as in my screen shot did not work because I used the sinular "epistle" rather than "epistles". I appreciate your help.

Hi Eric,

One thing I noted. By comparison with Helen's post Eric your search dropped the asterisk on the end of epistle which would have found both epistle and epistles.

Thx

D

EricC, you actually found a minor bug. We added flex searching in version 10 to help take care of these type of queries, so you should have been able to just search for 'john epistle' and find the result. Unfortunately, there's a minor bug where this only works in some english fields of tools, not all of them. We'll get this fixed right away, so next time you can just search for 'john epistle' and get your result.

Oops! You're right. I did not even notice that asterisk until after I just read your post. :)

Joel, glad to help :). Seriously, thanks for keeping on top of stuff. Some day I'll get Accordance mastered or at least usable to me. It's hard to change horses in the middle of the stream.
