Replace Hard Drive for Mac Pro

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a Mac Pro (late 2007) and I just purchased a new hard drive 750 GB from 500 GB (I am having to do frequent disk utility repairs)...I use time machine and leave it plugged in.......I have found a website that will help me with the hardware...but how do I format the new drive?......I am running mavericks OS....I assume once I have it formatted I can plug in the backup and reload everything...any help or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated..

Thanks

Frank

Hello Frank,

I am no specialist here but I suggest you make an extra backup of the HD on an external HD. I use Superduper for that. I also have Time Machine as a second backup, but TM is slow IMHO.

After replacing the HD that came with my MBP 2010 with an SSD, I fired up my Mac using the external HD. Then I could start Superduper. Superduper then restored my Backup perfectly to my new SSD (should work for a HD too).

Succes!!

Hans

Frank – When I replaced the HD on my 2008 MBP, I bought a 'kit' from Other World Computing. I first installed the OS on the new drive, then moved all the data. The new drive was in an inclosure that came with the kit. After the new drive was ready to go, I just switched the drives. I was up and running the minute I restarted my MBP. Easy, and I'm not a 'true geek.' Here's a link for OWC video that shows how to replace the platter drive with an SSD, but the process is no different than it would be for installing a new platter drive. The filming could have been better done, however. I watched the video I used on my iPad while I did the work on my Mac.

By the way, the process is much easier on a 2008 MBP!

Thanks so much for answering my question...I already purchased another SATA drive...the video really helps...I do have an older OS CD and I guess I will use it to try and format the new drive..I will check into superduper....thanks for all your suggestions...

Frank – If I remember correctly, I downloaded the OS off the App Store and told it to install on the external drive (new drive). Then used Migration Assistant to move my stuff. I saved the old drive for a while to give me time to make sure I hadn't lost any data. Later, I erased the old drive and put it in an enclosure, so I'm still using it for backing up some stuff. OWC has some really nice enclosures. I particularly like this one.

As other have suggested, SuperDuper is the best option for making a clone of your failing (?) hard drive to your new 750GB hard drive. You can make bootable clones using DiskUtility but SuperDuper makes it easier.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions..

To make a long story short...the drive I ordered initially did not work..I did use super duper to copy everything...I think it was a hardware issue......I then contacted Old World computing and they sent me a new drive which did work and I was able to replace my old hard drive....I highly recommend starting with OWC...I did my research by reading blogs....speaking to a person form OWC was the smarter choice....so, a new learning experience..

Thanks again for the support from this forum..

You won't be disappointed, Frank. We've been using OtherWorldComputing for as long as they've been around. Consistently good products, service, and advice.
