Couple of Greek Textbooks Requested

I would like to request the addition of two essential Greek textbooks:

A Manual Greek Grammar of the New Testament - Dana & Mantey

Essentials of Greek Grammar - Summers/Stevens

Both of these are still widely used and would be a great addition to the Accordance Modules. Both Logos and Bibleworks include Summers' book already, but neither have Dana & Mantey. It would be great to see Accordance leap ahead and get both books available as a module.

Quotation from flyer17pilot:

"I would like to request the addition of two essential Greek textbooks:

A Manual Greek Grammar of the New Testament - Dana & Mantey <End of quote> (for whatever reason the forum is not allowing quoting for me)

+1 for Dana & Mantey

But … must be there's a licensing issue if none of the big three Bible software companies offer Dana & Mantey, right? Or is there some other reason?

I think Dana & Mantey may be out of print. I recently bought a copy, used, off Amazon. It was $35 plus shipping. There are new copies available on Amazon, but the prices are outrageous.

I constantly run into this problem when I need to find books about the Ancient Near East. The best ones were in print before I even was born and haven't resurfaced since then (Akkadisches Handwörterbuch comes to mind)! But I've been fortunate enough to find most of them in antique bookshops over the years - for a decent price too. I generally avoid Amazon, as they're overpriced most of the time, but you cannot argue with their range of books, though..

With kind regards

We do have a used bookstore that sells Christian & academic stuff. I need to check it out. I thought $35 was pretty reasonable. Especially when I look at the prices now. Ebay would be worth trying, too, for those who don't have such a bookstore nearby. Just checked, and they have a bunch of copies with wildly varying prices.

As for regular book shops, the lowest price for Dana & Mantey I could find was 8$ on AbeBooks

There was a copy for $0.99 on eBay, but it may be gone. The listing said it was very marked up.

There are PDFs online for free but I have no idea about copyright on this work.

Oh and while I'm here +1

Thx

The 1928 edition (as I understand it, the actual first edition) should be free of copyright problems. If someone had it, it could be made into a User Tool. I found what it says is the 1928 here for about $36: http://www.amazon.com/MANUAL-GRAMMAR-GREEK-NEW-TESTAMENT/dp/B000TXO23E/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1420775714&sr=1-6&keywords=dana+mantey. It seems that there were many editions – amazon.com lists 1928, 1955, 1957, 1963 (and maybe more). I recall reading somewhere that the 1957 (?) edition had a Scripture index not in the original.

I am not a copyright specialist but I thought that if copyright had been maintained on the work through it's editions then older editions were no more fair game than the latest. Is that not so ?

Thx

Well, I'm surely no copyright expert, either. And, based on what I just found on wikipedia.org, I probably was wrong by assuming the 1928 book had an expired copyright. ^_^

I found this on wikipedia.org (also not authoritative (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright): "In the United States, all books and other works published before 1923 have expired copyrights and are in the public domain.[45] In addition, works published before 1964 that did not have their copyrights renewed 28 years after first publication year also are in the public domain. Hirtle points out that the great majority of these works (including 93% of the books) were not renewed after 28 years and are in the public domain."

Of course, there is a lot more information there, also, but taking that as if it were all there was, it does seem that D&M 1928 would still be copyrighted assuming the later editions included renewals of copyright, which they probably did.

Edit: fixed typos.

What about Decker's Reading Koine Greek? I actually need to buy this book this week. Sad to see it is on Logos, and not on Accordance (It seems to always be this way).

Although the Logos price in AUD is double what it costs to by in hardback in a store. Perhaps the pricing has something to do with it?

We have a license for Decker's work, but have not begun to develop it. As with all Grammars, it will be relatively complex and we have many other projects underway. So it's just a matter of time and priority, but eventually we'l have it available.

I would like to also request that we see Essentials of New Testament Greek by Ray Summers in Accordance. Thank you
