Excluding a Tag from a HITS search

I'm wanting to find all the Hebrew words that occur only in the book of Esther, except for those that are proper nouns (or genitlics).

Searching the forums helped me figure out how to look for all the words unique to a particular book, but I'm having problems figuring out how to exclude certain grammatical tags.

Here's what I have so far:

One window (BHS-W4 2) has the following search argument:

* <AND> [RANGE Genesis-Lamentations; Daniel-2Chronicles]

If I set the second for:

‏*@- ‎[HITS BHS-W4 2]‏ ‎<AND>‏ ‎[RANGE Esther]‏

I get all the words unique to Esther (the order may be off here, due to Hebrew being r-t-l. I just copied my search argument and pasted it here.) Looking at the details for this search, I realized that it would be helpful to exclude proper nouns.

I tried this in the second window to exclude proper names:

‏(*@- ‎[HITS BHS-W4 2]‏ ‎<AND>‏ ‎[RANGE Esther]‏ ) @- ‎[NOUN -properName]‏ ‎

but it doesn't work.

Since part (not all) of my problem has to do with proper word/argument order in Hebrew search windows, I'd appreciate if someone could provide the correct seach syntax in a screen shot.

Thanks!

Firstly you do not need the *@ at the beginning of your second argument, simply:

[HITS BHS-W4 2]‏ ‎‏ ‎[RANGE Esther]‏

will work.

Secondly you do not need a double negative, just specify that the Hits are not proper names.

To exclude a tag add the @- ‎[NOUN properName]‏ ‎to the HITS so that, in reverse order, it will look like this:

[HITS BHS-W4 2] @- ‎[NOUN properName]‏ ‎‏ ‎[RANGE Esther]‏

This makes a single expression for the lemmas you are looking for, so no need for parentheses to group it, just AND it with the Range or set the Range in the More options.

Sorry, don't have time to do an image now.

Thanks for such a quick response!

I had less trouble than I expected with getting the word order correct, so it looks like I don't need a screen shot afterall. BUT, the syntax you provided finds all the words in common between Esther and the rest of the OT, except for proper nouns. I want to exclude words found in other books as well as proper nouns unique to Esther. Or am I missing something?

I'll keep fiddling and let you know if I get it figured out. I don't need a solution immediately, but I would like to get it figured out eventually.

Blessings,

Got It!!!!!

I eliminated the RANGE command, setting a range for Esther in the drop down menu instead. Then I entered this in the "second" window:

‏* @-‎[HITS BHS-W4 2]‏ @ -‎[NOUN properName]‏ ‎

That did it!

I did then go back and and set the range in the search box like this:

‏* @-‎[HITS BHS-W4 2]‏ @ -‎[NOUN properName]‏ ‎<AND>‏ ‎[RANGE Esther]‏ ‎

That worked, too.

NOTE: the search syntax here is in reverse order. i.e. a Hebrew text search box,the * needs to be at the far right. (I know you know this Helen, but I thought it might be helpful for anyone else who wants to do this type of search and is as "directionally challenged" as I am!)

Thanks for the help!

I am glad it helped. Sorry I missed the point about the words exclusive to Esther, I was in a hurry.

No problem. I've done the same kind of thing plenty of times myself.
