Martin Z
Hello, Does anyone know which resource explains the meanings of biblical names, like which root is associated and what is it's meaning. The Bible sometimes gives explanation. We can also figure out many of them ourselves. But still not all, and sometimes not sure about that. Blessings, Martin
R. Mansfield
The Holman Bible Dictionary provides meanings to most names (although I notice that none is given to the first entry, "Aaron.").
Peter Brylov Christensen
The Holman Bible Dictionary provides meanings to most names (although I notice that none is given to the first entry, "Aaron."). Strange that it isn't there. HALOT says that Aaron is an Egyptian loanword used in theophoric names, meaning "<insert name of deity> is great". Ken Simpson
Hitchcock’s Bible names is pretty complete, if old. It’s part of the starter package. Hitchcock’s Bible Names Dictionary Bible Names Dictionary (updated) (Names) Based upon “Hitchcock’s New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible,” published in the late 1800s. Updated to modern name spellings and hypertexted by Phil Robertson. Copyright © 1999 OakTree Software, Inc. Martin Z
Thanks a lot, Ken. I guess I need to explore the resources more.
Ken Simpson
No probs. There’s actually quite a lot of good stuff, even in the Starter. Hitchcock is based on the KJV, so look for KJV spellings, not more modern ones. Edited December 26, 2014 by Ken Simpson
ukfraser
Slightly off topic but there are also a load of standard dictionaries with all the different modules and they are also worth looking at (despite the fact that they are not specific 'name' dictionaries, loads on aaron in them). It only takes a click or two. Oh the joys of technology (and the accordance elves!) ;o) Edited January 1, 2015 by ukfraser
Ken Simpson
Fraser is right. Loads of good stuff in Eerdmans’ Bibe Dictionary - come with every Starter Collection!
