Errantly Searching for Verse in a Word mode

A year or so ago, Accordance added a great feature in Search windows. When errantly searching for a word while in Verses mode, a dialog says:

The book "rapture" cannot be found.

(Cancel) (Do Word Search)

At some point, it was discussed to add the same for the opposite scenario, and I'd like to once again suggest it. Mostly because I do this all the time. I have a suggestion for implementation.

When a search fails because a word is not found, before entering the routine that opens the "Enter Words..." dialog, first run a couple checks on the search string. First, check to see if it is a simple search (with no <AND>, etc.), and then check to see if the word qualifies as a valid verse reference for the module. If those criteria are met (and perhaps additional limiting factors that should be thought through), then instead of throwing up the "Enter Words..." dialog, bring up a dialog similar to the above. Something like:

The search "1Cor" cannot be found.

(Enter Words...) (Do Verses Search)

I'm trying but can't come up with a downside of this kind of implementation.

Further, I'd love a preference for the current feature and my suggested one to automatically do the other search (Word or Verses) instead of first asking me. I'm quite certain I've never seen that dialog when I didn't in fact go ahead and click through.

Joe,

If memory serves correctly, something along these lines is already on the list for version 8. :-)

The bibleworks idea of putting a dot "." before a search seems more convenient than fiddling with the radio button. It would be nice if there was some textual way to swap from one to the other.

It seems adding a cryptic dot goes against the intuitive syntax of the Accordance search formulas IMHO. There's a couple key combos to switch to Verses or Word mode.

Anyhow, the features being discussed here are to smartly offer corrections when a user forgets to move from one to the other.

Agreed. If you pause and think about it for a couple of seconds you'll see how counterintuitive (read "un-Accordance") that would be.
