10 Days to Leopard

I placed my order for Leopard today. I was disappointed that the academic price was $116 when it has usually been around $79 in the past.

How many others out there will brave the waters of early adoption?

I'll brave it on one of my Macs, but probably not both, that way I have one that I know will not have bugs...

Amazon has Leopard for $109. Also, educational institutions will have it for $69 for their students. You just can't get that price online.

Amazons price actually dropped. I pre-ordered it in June I think. It was $129 on amazon. I had to cancel my order and re-order it just now so I could get the lesser price.

FYI for those who "pre-ordered" from Amazon: If your original order included the "Price Guarantee" you should be getting the lower price without having to cancel and re-order.

Just not at MY institution. There are a lot more Macs on campus than there used to be, but there's still a prevalent Windows mindset for the time being.

Thats what I thought, but viewing my order status it did not reflect that. Im sure if I contacted support they would change it for me, but it was just as easy to cancel and reorder.

I forgot I got a government employee discount from apple which put the price right about amazons and Ill get it on the release date of the 26th, so I went that route.

Since this is my first upgrade on a mac I have a question to those who have upgraded their OS in the past. Do most tend to install the upgrade over the previous OS or do a clean wipe and install fresh then put all their apps back on.

I've never done a Mac upgrade, either, but from what I've read in other places, the clean install is unnecessary on OS X (some have called it the "Windows way" of upgrading your OS). Only if your system is really cluttered or needs to be wiped should you do the clean install. I suppose your mileage may vary, but that seems to be the consensus on Mac forums.

Does OakTree have any advice for potential Leopard early-adopters and Accordance?

As always, early adopters do so at their own risk!!

We are running 7.3 successfully on beta versions of Leopard with only cosmetic problems with the tabs in the workspace. We will correct these for version 7.4 which we expect to release next month. Therefore we will appreciate any bug reports that intrepid early adopters do find with 7.3 and Leopard.

Yes, all you really have to do is install the upgrade over your current OS. The install will update your software and get rid of old stuff for you. I've been using OS X ever since the beta in 2000, and I've never had a problem with an upgrade. However, I think it was the Jaguar release (or was it Panther?) in which for some unknown reason, attached firewire drives were erased. They fixed this later on, but if it happened to you, it didn't matter because your stuff was gone! So it's best to always have any external drives or accessories disconnected from your Mac before you run an update. And do a thorough backup ahead of time. I plan on backing up my personal files on Thursday.

GREAT ADVICE. BTW whoever doesn't backup on a normal frequency should never complain. You might as well be at the casino, since you are just playing the odds.

And another easy solution is to wait a few days after the latest release before you update in order to stay off the bleeding edge. Watch the Mac internet sites for comments about difficulties or bugs.

While waiting for Time Machine, or if you have decided to stick with Tiger, a great backup solution you can use for free is Carbon Copy Cloner. It is now Universal and will automatically back-up your system on a set schedule for you. You can get it here.

If only I had such discipline. But I will be backed up :-)

While I would love to join you by jumping in head first, out here in Indonesia we have to wait until December before our Apple Authorized Retailer (iBox) is even scheduled to get it. If it is anything like iWork 08 and iLife 08 it will be a month after that. I look forward to hearing what you Accordance users think about the upgrade!

email received a few hours ago stating leopard was shipped. I should have it tomorrow. Im also finding apps are getting launched rather quickly for leopard compatibility. I have read that many developers are holding out on current releases due to the fact they are waiting for leopard. These apps have been designed to take advantage of the core animation features of leopard.

I wonder if Accordance is working on taking advantage of these new features.

We have just released our upgrade with Leopard compatibility. As for new features, we will implement any that we feel will really enhance the functionality of Accordance. We are always open to creative ideas for new features. (Most suggestions are just minor tweaks of current features). However, we have plenty of very exciting new features in the pipeline which do not depend on Leopard, and we have enough ideas to keep us busy for the foreseeable future.

Just finished my in-place upgrade to 10.5. So far, no problems.

The initial install took about 1.5 hours on my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz w/ 1G of RAM.

The first time I started up took a long time (3-4 minutes) but things have sped up slightly. Spotlight appears to reindex after an in-place upgrade as well so my machine is definitely struggling to keep up. Hopefully the performance will increase after the indexing is done. After reboot there was a process called upgradedb running as well. This ran for several minutes and finally ended. However, while it was running it was using nearly 30% of my CPU utilization.

BTW, I like the new look of the tabs in 7.4. Very nice.

I'll post again if I encounter issues.

I just installed Leopard, too. Everything is working fine so far. And we can all celebrate the official demise of pinstripes in Accordance and all other programs. Brushed metal seems to be gone, too. Even the brushed metal setting in Mellel won't produce brushed metal!

Overall, the interface looks very modern. Now let's hope that it will perform as good as it looks.

By the way Jeremy, my installation took about 40 minutes. But my Mac's a bit newer than yours. :P

How fickle we Mac users are. I remember the day when everyone was celebrating the fact that we had OS X pinstripes in Accordance! ;)

This is very true. I'm also starting to grow weary of the translucent blue, not that I don't like the new tabs in 7.4...
