I came across this scripture and did not find it in my accordance bible. Why is that. It skips this Mat 17: 20 then Mat. 17: 22 no verse 21 ?

Please enlighten me.

Matt. 17:21

However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and Fasting.

Which Bible are you using? It's in some Bible texts but not in others (in both Greek and English). Some include it in brackets.

It's generally assumed though that the verse is not original to the gospel, but rather a scribal addition to make it parallel with Mark 9:29.

You need to be sure that you are checking for the verses with the search text the same as the text pane display. In some translations verses are merged. In others they may be missing in one but present in others. The easiest way is to click in an adjacent verse and then click Context on the Resource palette or Contextual menu. That will display all the verses for that translation.

Thanks R. Mansfield,

I'm using the KJV and NIV. I just feel that if this was a scripture that is "assumed" that there would be a foot note to this and not just delete it.

Helen Brown,

I think that I'm doing it right with my search. I have it set to search the hole Bible with an * in the top search and the scripture at the bottom. but that scripture is not there. Not in the NIV or KJV. Is this a deleted scripture or an error?

Thanks for your response,

Bruce Long

The NIV does leave out this verse (see attached screenshot). However, in the NIV Notes, it has the following footnote:

Matt. 17:20

“you” — Some manuscripts you. But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

In my KJV it includes this verse, so my theory is what Helen was suggesting. Recall that in Accordance, the bible that is chosen in the Entry box (near the top) determines what to show, while the bible chosen lower down actually shows it. So, if your top is NIV, it doesn't show Matt 17:21 regardless of what bible is displayed below, as the NIV has no Matt 17:21.

So when dealing with missing verses, make sure that the Bible at the top is the one you are concerned with rather than the display Bible. Hopefully this makes sense.

Bruce,

Our older european textual traditions (ie. the 400 year old KJV) have some verses and phrases that later discovered NT manuscripts revealed to be later additions by scribes. A fun way to see a list of verses (though not differences in words and phrases):

1. Open a Search window

2. Set the module to a modern version like the NRSV or the NIV

3. Search for * (essentially displaying all verses)

4. Open an additional Search window

5. Set it to search for Words

6. Search for:

* <NOT> [CONTENTS NIV]

Using this CONTENTS command, you are telling the window to find every word in the current text, except for those verses which are also being displayed in the NIV window. (You may need to change NIV to match the title of the window or tab you began with.)

Thanks Joel,

This makes sense to me now. I was not getting it but when you explained it it made total sense.

Thanks for your help,

The text about fasting at Matthew 17:21, appearing in the King James Version, is not contained in some of the most important ancient manuscripts. Likewise, although the King James Version mentions fasting at Mark 9:29, Acts 10:30, and 1 Corinthians 7:5, according to such manuscripts these texts do not contain any references to fasting.

Bruce, this may be obvious now but I think it is worth mentioning. Accordance doesn't change the text they are provided by the publisher (at least as far as content is concerned). You're seeing the same thing in Accordance as you'd see in a print version of the NIV.

Edit: Wow! Old thread! I was wondering why Joel was posting screenshots of such an old version. :-)

Also, to make sure you have the most updated version of your bible module, please place the most recent Accordance compact disc Library into your optical drive and run the installer.
