Metzger: Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament

Hi ya,

 

Can anyone tell me if this work is tagged to the UBS4 or its apparatus in any way ?

I am wondering how easy it is to navigate from a point in the text to the UBS to Metzger's explanation of the Committee's thinking on it.

You can place the commentary in a parallel pane so it scrolls with the text. Or you can select a verse reference and amplify to Metzger. Either way you will get to the commentary on the verse in question.

Daniel - I regularly use Metgzer and find it helpful. Also consider Comfort. I never look at one without looking at the other. The NET Notes are also very, very useful. Dr. J's podcasts (29.1 & 29.2) on these resources are very good and show you why you might want to have all three.

 

The other excellent resource is the CNTTS. It lists all the variants including ones that the others don't deal with. (Check out the participle in Acts 3:20 in the UBS4 vs Textus Receptus. It does not show up in apparatus of UBS4 or NA27, but it is listed in CNTTS. It turns out that the variant is unique to the TR.)

Thanx for this. Yes Comfort does look good. I am trying to work out if I can review a copy firsthand but reviews of it seem very good. I think the CNTTS might be going a little far for me at this point. I'll check out the NET notes also - I assume they are the same as those online at net.bible.org in the Notes tab. The variant I was looking at the period at the end of John 1:3 and where the ὃ γέγονεν was supposed to live. I know Metzger discusses this but don't know if Comfort or others do. I see that the NET notes do. And for 20 dollars they would seem hard to pass up. Hmmmm......

Yes, Comfort discusses that passage. I have found the Comfort book to be fairly exhaustive and very helpful. I would choose it over Metzger if forced to use just one.

 

The introduction describes the book as offering "commentary—from Matthew to Revelation—covering every textual variation noted in the major English translations".

I think Metzger's value lies in the insight it gives to the UBS4 apparatus and the decisions made. Comfort will engage different (and potentially more) variants and will also note how some more contemporary English versions render the differences. Also, there is a philosophical difference between the two and it helps to have both to get more than one perspective on the matter.

 

The NET notes are also excellent for textual criticism. I believe the textual critical Daniel Wallace had a hand in that project and the notes give a wealth of information.

Thanx Bob, that's helpful. And yes Wallace is certainly listed in the NET Preface that I found online (NT Senior Ed.). And the notes seem to be very extensive.
