Connecting Gen-3 iPad to Projector

Recommended Posts

I had a question, and it might be better under feature request. I love to use my iPAD for my Sunday School class. The new gen-3 iPAD does NOT connect to the projector via VGA connection. (I have tried this on two different projectors). So, I use the Epson iPROJECTION application to connect wirelessly. The problem: Epson iPROJECTION only projects: Keynote, PAGES, or PDFs such that I can NOT directly project with Epson iPROJECTOR.

In other words, back when I had the gen-2 iPAD, I could directly use Accordance.

I would love it you could add a feature: OPEN WITH, so that I could then pick OPEN with EPSON iPROJECTOR, and directly use Accordance once again.

Jonna, the iPad 3rd Gen does connect to projectors via VGA. Are you sure you are not talking about the iPad air?

With the iPad 3rd Gen you can use the Apple to VGA adapter or the Compsoite AV cable or the Digital AV Adapter with the iPad 3rd Gen (it has the Apple 30 pin connector). Check Apple page.

Check out this article. I think it will help you.

The simplest way to connect wirelessly to a projector or TV with an HDMI input is to connect the display device to an Apple TV, then use AirPlay to mirror the iPad screen on the TV. An add-on accessory from Belkin will allow the Apple TV to connect to a projector via VGA (http://store.apple.com/us/product/HB416ZM/A/belkin-hdmi-to-vga-projector-adapter).

For those who are willing to put up with the hassle of wires, use one of the Apple iPad adapters that supports video: VGA or Digital AV (http://store.apple.com/us/search/iPad-adapters#!). If you are trying to use Apple 30 pin to Lighting connecter adapter with older 30 pin video adapters, forget it. It will NOT support video. You have to buy one of the new adapters. :-(

If you want to use an iPad, and mirror its screen on your Mac or PC, I recommend an app called Reflector (http://www.airsquirrels.com/reflector/).

I hope these suggestions help!

Dr. J.

From your recommendation I assume that you have experience with the Belkin adapter. I have a couple questions. 1. We have tried using an Apple TV and airplay from both iPad and MacBook Pro using the HDMI cable to our projector. The Apple TV displays the video from Airplay but it is smaller and has black bands (border) around the image. This is a known issue. So, does the HDMI to VGA adapter eliminate this reduction in image size? 2. What has been your experience with this particular adapter? At the Apple store it has very poor reviews of it.

Thanks in advance for your information.

By the way, I have a iPad 3rd Gen. and use the VGA adapter with cable all the time.

Hi Tony,

Have you tried setting your projector to match the iPad resolution? Unless your projector or TV can reproduce the dimensions of Apple TV HD you may get the black bands on the top and bottom because your projector is set for Standard TV or other device dimensions that do not match HD

Hi David,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have experimented with every known setting on both the AppleTV and projector (BenQ SP920P) to attempt to get it to display properly. Nothing works. The AppleTV will create the bands (border) on a HDTV but with the setting that will "zoom" out it will fill the screen. However, on the projector it will not. Plus, the signal from the AppleTV to the projector yields a significantly dimmer image than going straight from the iPad (using the VGA adapter), or from the MacBook Pro (using the VGA adapter). I have even tried using an HDMI to DVI cable from the AppleTV to the projector. No improvement there either. The only thing I have not tried is the HDMI to VGA.

The issue of the failure to zoom out is a known issue. I have Googled it several times. I was hoping the HDMI to VGA might be a solution. I would welcome any input.

Sorry, I don't have personal experience with the Belkin adapter. Just saw it and thought it was a great product. Perhaps someone here one the forum does.

The projector usually have different settings for TV, computer, etc. The dimming problem could be cause that the output of the Apple TV is design for TV and the one for the iPad to VGA as a computer (I am guessing). Try setting the Projector to TV(or something similar) when you have the Apple TV. You could also increase the brightness as every device has a different calibration.

I don't have experience with that specific Belkin product, but in general they are good.

Hope you get it working soon.
