Word Biblical Commentary: 58-Volume Set

I have the Essentials Collection so I already have the Complete Tyndale Commentary. My question is: Is the Word Biblical Commentary Complete Set a really good commentary? I know it is very highly rated on bestcommentaries.com, but I wanted to get some feedback from some of you who have used both, or if there is a complete commentary set you would recommend over the WBC that is affordable. The WBC 58 volume set would just be $480 with the 20% off until Monday. Seems like a really good deal, but I want to be conservative with what I add in terms of cost because there comes a point where you can just get more than you can use. I use the WBC for preaching and personal study and teaching. It goes more in depth than Tyndale. Some volumes are, of course, better than others, but on the balance it is good.

 

Note: it is not a "complete set." There are still volumes to be released.

I have only the NT in WBC. It is a technical commentary according to one of Dr J's podcasts. I think you will find it useful whether you know any original language or not.

 

I never rely upon just one commentary, or one Bible version. Consulting several solid commentaries is the best way to go, IMO. With the help of a couple of guys on this forum, I was able to understand a text change from the NA27th to NA28th for which I didn't have an explanation in any of my other resources. I hadn't even thought to look at WBC for that. I'll know better in the future.

Can someone post an example of what Word Biblical Commentary says about a specific passage so I can compare it to my Tyndale so I can see what I might gain by adding the WBC to my Accordance? I would like to see how it compares as far as in depth and technical aspects. It is coming down to the wire to make a decision and be able to get the 20% discount on a significant purchase. I am already going to add the IVP collection, Mounce's complete, and Comfort. I am just trying to decide if I need the WBC right now. I know it is good, but it is a significant amount of money and I am just trying to be cautious about getting so much that I am overwhelmed.

Is there a particular passage you're looking for? Posting long excerpts from passages seems to be Dan Francis's area of speciality.

 

But to answer your question--WBC is far more in-depth and technical than Tyndale. If you're looking for a good go-to technical commentary that covers much (most?) of the Bible, WBC is a good one, and one that a lot of people use. You'll see footnotes (all hyperlinked in Accordance) for the author's translation choices, textual criticism notes, notes on structure and form criticism (especially through the Gospels), and comment on individual words, phrases, and verses. The level of detail varies a bit from volume to volume, but is generally fairly thorough.

The WBC was the first top-drawer commentary I purchased and I really like it. David Aune's commentary on Revelation is long and technical, so it's probably not practical to paste that section here. If you send me a personal message with an email address, I'll send you a pdf with the material on that passage.
