Can't make sync connection

My iPad2 and Mac appear to be on the same network. The router address is the same for both. Both can connect to the Internet successfully.

I have iOS verion 1.2 open, and Accordance 9.3.1.

I've tried starting the sync from the MacOS side, and also starting from the iOS side. They never communicate...each seems to be waiting for the other.

The iOS version says, Accordance Sync Waiting for Accordance.

The MacOS version has a spinning icon and "Searching for devices."

Bill, check airport on the Mac and Network in Settings on the IOS. See if both have exactly the same name. My home system has a guest WiFi and a secured one. My iPhone turned out to be on the guest network. Changed it, then everything worked fine.

Bill,

The way Bonjour is implemented in Accordance is that the iOS device broadcasts its availability and the Mac application searches for this broadcast on the local network. If the Mac app cannot see the iOS device there can be one of several reasons for this. Let's cover a few basic ones first.

First they must both be connected to the same local network over WiFi. The quickest way to check that is to make sure the name of the WiFi network they are connected to matches. For Mac OS X this is in the System Preferences>Network Pane. The Network Name for the Airport connection is what is important. For iOS, the network name is found in the Settings app under the Wi-Fi table row.

A second thing to check is whether or not the MacOS X firewall (or third party firewall) is blocking the incoming Bonjour broadcast from the iOS device. You might try turning off the firewall (if it is on) and see if Accordance for Mac can see the iOS device broadcast. (You may need a restart of Accordance for Mac and/or a reboot for this to take effect).

Another gotcha is to not have both an active Airport connection and a wired (Ethernet) connection at the same time. This can sometimes confuse Bonjour. If that is the case, try turning off the wired connection and see if that allows Accordance for Mac to see the iOS device.

Some third party wireless access points or routers are not setup to support Bonjour by default. If this is your situation then you'll have to contact technical support for your router or access point since only they will know how to configure it to allow Bonjour.

Please let me know if any of these workarounds are successful for you.

Thanks in advance,

Scott.

Bill,

Another thing you can do is download a utility called "Bonjour Browser" (which you can find via Google). Then you can check to see if the iOS device broadcast is getting seen by your Mac. When I tap the sync toolbar icon on my iOS device I get the following entry in the Bonjour Browser list running on my Mac:

If you're not seeing the _accordsync_tcp service entry and the name of your iOS device in this list, then Accordance for Mac will never be able to see it either.

Here's your problem...you can't assume that your users are on a network over which they have control.

The network folks do not allow Bonjour.

"We do not support broadcast or multicast technologies as they are 'chatty' and have the potential to create 'storms' in a busy network."

The syncing needs to work somehow via plain old WiFi (or by sync cable), as is the case for GoodReader and everything else that I have.

I made a temporary computer-to-computer network, and the sync worked fine.

Bill,

Bonjour is only used for service discovery, not for the actual networking (which is straight tcp/ip over WiFi). The comment about Bonjour being "chatty" is nothing by pure FUD propagated by your networking folks. That being said, I certainly understand there will be cases where users don't have control over the wireless networks they are using.

So the use of a temporary computer to computer network is a good workaround in these cases. This is probably the direction we are going to start recommending for users that don't have more control over their wireless network.

However, there are a couple of additional points you made above that I feel I need to address directly:

There is no public API that allows syncing over the sync cable outside of iTunes. And as I've mentioned before in these forums, using iTunes to sync GB of data proved extremely problematic and Apple themselves recommended the approach we are currently using to avoid this issue.

GoodReader's own documentation recommends creating a "Computer to Computer" network (which you did above) to work around any peer to peer networking discovery issues. So GoodReader's solution is no more plain Wi-Fi than our solution is.

I have an iPad and iPod Touch. The ipad was recognized immediately but the ipod touch was not. I thought of all sorts of issues but as a long time Mac user I thought, "restart." So I rebooted the ipod touch and it popped up immediately when I initiated the sync. Sometimes don't overlook a simple solution.

FUD?

As for GoodReader, it does sync via WiFi to folders that are on my iDisk and Dropbox accounts. I don't guess I've done a direct USB or WiFi from Mac to iPad via GoodReader and iTunes, so I stand corrected.

Best wishes.

FUD?

Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. Bonjour sometimes gets painted with the same brush as the older AppleTalk protocol (which was very, very chatty; every AppleTalk device announcing "I am here, I am here" every 20 seconds or so.) But Bonjour doesn't work that way.

Ah, yes. DropBox and iDisk support for user content like notes and tools would be a great addition to both Accordance for Mac and Accordance for iOS.

Thanks for your help and support,

Scott.
