rickc
I was curious why the BHS does not match the JPS and CJB(or the other way around). the differences are minor but Job and proverbs are switched, Songs and Ruth are switched, as well as Lamentations and Ecclesiastes. For some reason the writings section is arranged differently.
milestein
The BHS is an updated version of the Leningrad Codex, the oldest exant copy of the Masoretic text, the original having been compiled by Jews between the seventh and tenth centuries. The order of the Codex, though close to the Tanakh's, varies slightly, and though the compilers have moved Chronicles to the end, the rest of the books remain as the Codex presents them. The JPS and the CJB (a modification of the JPS) keep to the traditional Tanakh-based order. My question is why certain sections of Christian bibles are divided differently from the Tanakh. For example, the Christian Bible's 1 Kings 4:30 is the Tanakh's 1 Kings 5:10, though any verse in chapters 3 or 6 (and onward in either direction) is identical. Can anybody shed any light on this?
