More atlas woes, ay caramba!

The Atlas icon in the toolbar isn't working, it gives you the menu of map styles but isn't opening the atlas.

It does work it you already have the atlas opened.

BTW why is it Atlas in the toolbar and Map in the File >> New menu?

I share that question. I think I've seen those terms used interchangeably, but I'm not sure why they are.

Hi Aliistair,

Atlas in the toolbar seems to work ok for me on Mac.

Thx

Should have said this is 11.0.1. Daniel, is it working "cold", when you don't already have an atlas window/pane open?

It works for me in 11.0.1 on a Mac running Mavericks, but it takes longer than usual to open. You do have to have a place name selected (or at least have clicked on it so that a blinking cursor is located in the word) in order for it to work, but that has always been the case with the toolbar icon.

I've wondered about the Atlas/Maps thing myself. I thought maybe Accordance was moving to the Maps terminology because they also carry "static" atlases now, and wanted to avoid confusion. But the lack of consistency in terminology is confusing itself.

EDIT That solves it, but seems non-intuitive as it doesn't work that way from the library. Also the Timeline doesn't work that way from the toolbar. Inconsistent yes.

I don't have a place name selected as far as I know.

thx

No that doesn't solve it. If I open the atlas from the Library, then close it, I can reopen the atlas from the toolbar. Even more inconsistent and perplexing :)

Not sure what is going on. I just restarted Accordance with a last session where the Atlas was closed and it opened fine from the toolbar without first opening from the library.

thx

Ok, here's the trick, that I had forgotten: If the cursor is in the search box, clicking an icon on the toolbar will open a new instance of the resource without trying to search. If the cursor/selection is anywhere else, it will try to search for the "selected" text and complain if it can't find it.

Back in the Resources Palette days, one could hold down the control key (on a Mac, not sure that the Windows equivalent would be) and open a new instance rather than search. This functionality was lost when the Resource Palette morphed into the Toolbar and has not been restored. See this thread.

As an aside to the Accordance team, and a follow-up to the thread linked above: One problem for me with the current setup is that I work primarily within text tabs, not search tabs. So putting the cursor in a search box isn't always possible/easy for me. (There are no search boxes in text tabs). I'd still really like to see some version of this old functionality restored.

It may still be, though, Alistair, that you are experiencing a bug. What OS are you using?

And, you can always use the "New" toolbar icon to open up a new instance, without amplifying/searching. This is what I've trained myself to do, since I don't keep my library window open.

All that said, Alistair, you may be experiencing a bug. What system are you working on?

Can't you just click in a margin around a text to de-select a word? That works for me.

If I do that, Accordance tells me that I have to have a word selected.

Jonathan, do you have "require selection for amplifying" check in Preferences>Amplify? I do not. That might be the difference.

Ok yes that seems to work. Selecting the word "heavens" and clicking the Atlas in the toolbar pops up a dialog saying it cannot find the selected word "heavens" on the map.

And as Jonathan says deselecting it allows the Atlas to open from the toolbar.

thx

Yes, I have it selected. Now that you mention it, I think I remember turning it on in response to these kinds of amplify issues.

Yosemite 10.10, so may its a Yosemite thing.

Very possibly. I'm still on Mavericks on my Macs. I will upgrade to Yosemite eventually, but I need time to upgrade 2 Macs and an iPad (to iOS 8) essentially simultaneously (due to iCloud Drive issues with iWork), and haven't managed to find that yet. Some day...

Do any of the suggestions offered here help in the meantime?

I just turned it off and it did seem to change the behaviour but then I crashed out.

But if I click away from a piece of text but still in the pane of the text then the open from the toolbar gives this error message : "In order to search for words, there must be a valid selection in the frame."

If I click away to another pane - eg. info pane, then I get the crash in http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14364

Turning the pref. on seems the best.

Thx

D

This is what is happening.

1) I open Accordance, a bible text opens automatically. I click Atlas on the toolbar, up comes the menu, but no Atlas opens.

2) I open Accordance, a bible text opens automatically. I click Preferences on the toolbar, then close it (cancel), then click Atlas, the Atlas opens.

3) I open Accordance, a bible text opens automatically. I click Timeline on the toolbar, it opens. I click Atlas, but no Atlas opens.

Quite inconsistent.

Alistair, I can't reproduce this, even with your specific test cases. We saw and fixed Daniel's crash, but past that it is working properly. The only 'issue' is that if you don't require a selection to amplify, and you have a blink point, it will try and amplify that selection.
