Can't Close Accordance

I downloaded and installed Accordance 11.0.1 yesterday on my Dell laptop running Windows 7. Linking to the DropBox app kept my program crashing almost instantly until I deleted the app from DropBox; now the program runs normally. UNTIL I'm ready to exit. I can't get the program to close, either by clicking on the red x at the top right of the screen or by going to "File ... Quit". The only way I can close the program is by doing a Control-Alt-Delete and closing it that way. When I open Accordance after that, it says the program crashed, and do I want to restore the last saved session. (The program runs OK after that.)

Anyone else having this experience? Any ideas on what I need to do?

himtall54, can you explain what you mean by "until I deleted the app from Dropbox"?

Did you got into the Edit menu, Preferences, the Syncing section and unlink from Dropbox there? If not, how did you do whatever it is that you did?

No, I simply opened up Dropbox and deleted the folder from there. After that I was able to use Accordance normally (except for the exit feature, which still is not working). I didn't make any adjustments in Accordance to disable Dropbox.

I should also note that Accordance closes normally when I'm using my Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 7. I do very little work on that laptop, so I'd much rather get it working on my Dell, my main work computer.

I've been thinking about this. Can you use the Edit, Preferences, Syncing to selectively turn off the various Dropbox components to figure out which one of them seems to be causing the problem?

Thanks for your reply; I did as you suggested - Edit, Preferences, Syncing - and first unlinked from DropBox. That enabled me to exit normally from Accordance. Then I tried to link to DropBox again to try to do as you said - "turn off the various Dropbox components" - and Accordance immediately began aborting as soon as I started opening the program. I unlinked again, and now the program is working just as it should.

I'm fine with not using DropBox. It's just curious that one laptop with Windows 7 works while the other doesn't.

Well, that's progress. I am curious which of the components being synced within Dropbox is the problem. Sessions? My Places? Based on it happening at startup, those would be my first guesses, but only guesses. I wish I could duplicate it on my system, but since it only happens on yours, something unique is going on. So if you could uncheck all of the 6 components, and add them back in one at a time, closing Accordance and opening it on each one, it would be helpful to know which is misbehaving for you.

Also, if you have a WinExcept.txt in C:\Program Data\Accordance and/or one or more Error_report [date/time.txt exceptions in the \Log subfolder, it would be interesting for me to look at those. They are usually generated on a crash. If you have some, let me know and I'll PM an email address you can use to send me those files.

P.S. \Program Data\ is usually a hidden folder and you need to enable viewing hidden folders to go in there and look.

After unchecking all 6 of the components, I then went back and checked them one at a time, closing the program after each one and restarting it. The problem appears to be with the bookmark component. When that one is checked, the program shuts down almost immediatedly upon startup. The others are presently checked, and the program seems to be working well.

I looked in the C:\ProgramData\Accordance area, and there is an Error report you might want to look at. Let me know how you'd like for me to get that to you.

Thanks for your interest and help!

Thank you! PM sent.

Bookmarks is not what I would've guessed. Hopefully the error report will shed even more light.

Yup; it's the bookmarks component. With the other five checked and Accordance working well, I checked the bookmarks box again, and, sure enough, it started crashing upon startup. When it's unchecked, everything works just fine, even with it linked to DropBox.

Question: What versions of Accordance are you running on both machines? You reference 11.0.1 above--is the other machine also 11.0.1 or is it 10.4.-ish? Or have you moved up to 11.0.2 on one or both?

(Just trying to keep track of 'Who's on first...')

This machine, my Dell (my main workhorse), is running 11.0.2. The Toshiba is probably 11.0.1, but I've been away from home for a few days and that's where it is. I upgraded it to the new 11, but nothing more.

Interesting. Usually the format of the V11 error reports includes an Accordance Version number and a LogUserID. So it sorta smelled like a 10.4.X. level report.

If you could try and crash it again and email me a report from today, that might be helpful. It is possible (and would be irritating, obviously) that you could be crashing without generating a fresh report. That would make finding the problem more challenging.

Thanks for helping out on this.

That's the most recent error report in that log. There are a couple from a few months earlier, but nothing more recent.

Even with fresh crashes today? Ouch. OK. Let me chat with some others on the best way to proceed. Thanks.
