Greek keyboard discrepancy

I'm comparing the Greek keyboard layout from the keyboard viewer tool built into the Mac OS when trying to type Greek in Accordance, and the "Accordance fonts.pdf" document that comes with Accordance. There are discrepancies between the two.

For instance, on the PDF it says that omega should be on the "W" key. But the actual keyboard layout shows it as being on "V".

Also, I'm unable to add the iota subscript mark to vowels the way the PDF says it should work.

Does anyone have any experience with this who could help me out? I don't know what else to do. Thanks!

The differences between the Mac OS X Language Input and Accordance fonts are not one in the same. Mac OS X informs the user of what keystroke is necessary to access the Unicode Glyphs. Accordance fonts are not unicode, but are encoded to MacRoman. Accordance accepts input from the Greek input method, but it effectively translates the input to the corresponding MacRoman encoding.

Pertaining to the the iota subscript, I am not sure. Several things are at play here. If you are using the standard english input method, and your font set to Helena, then the iota subscript will follow according the Accordance PDF. If your input is set to Greek in the Mac OS X, it depends on what keyboard input you are using.

Hi mrnewsguy,

You either want to use the OSX polytonic keyboard input with the Acc preferences set to accept Greek polytonic keyboard input or you want to use the OSX keyboard mapping with the preference not checked. It sounds like you are using a mixture of the two.

I tend to use OSX Polytonic because its transferrable to other apps and the on-screen keyboard works better for me, but either should work.

If you don't have that pref set you should be able to follow the PDF keyboard layout for the Acc keyboard mappings. Shitf-Option-i is the keystroke for the iota sub in the Acc keyboard mapping. You can display the keyboard mapping in the app from Window -> Characters. You can make it a floating palette if you want. Rolling over the characters will show keystrokes.

thx

D

Hey — There is a built-in character view in Accordance. You get to is this way -

Choose the font.

This will get you by for now when working in Accordance, but will not help you if using Helena outside Accordance. The built-in Mac keyboard layout for Greek Polytonic will not work for Helena. Since I don't publish and don't have to get along, font-wise or document-wise, with anyone else, I just use Helena. When I had to do papers for class, I saved my Pages document as a PDF and that made it accessible to my professors.

I'm in Accordance 10, but, if I remember correctly, you get to the Characters the same way in version 9.

I just tried adding a circumflex and an iota subscript to a search term and had no problems. I have no idea what is going on in your case. Are you using Helena in your search entry box? Can you enter characters there? Breathing marks? The iota subscript requires pressing several keys at once: shift-option i, shift-option o, or option o depending on where the subscript needs to be placed. If you already know this, please forgive me. In the learning process, I have overlooked what seems obvious to others.

When I was began studying Greek, I printed out the PDF supplied by Accordance for Helena. I got it laminated. This was is very helpful for anyone new to either Greek or to Accordance. I don't need it for the alphabet, breathing marks, or single accents anymore, but still use it for the combos (e.g. circumflex + breathing).

Post back if you're still having problems.

If you're relatively new to Accordance, there is a free Training seminar in Charlotte on October 26th. Those are fun and very useful.

If you choose Greek from the Mac International menu, you aren't entering using Helena, but the Mac Unicode keyboard. Accordance automatically uses Helena when you search for Words in a Greek text, or in a Greek field of a tool. There is no need to switch to Greek, and then you will be using the Helena entry as per Accordance fonts and the Character palette.

You have all been very helpful. That was my problem. For some reason I got it in my head that I needed to turn on the Greek Mac keyboard. That was messing me up trying to follow the PDF. By the way, I also printed it & put it in a page protector so I can refer to it whenever needed. Thanks to everyone for your advice.
