simonholley
Hi I'm wanting to search all of my commentaries for a greek word where it's shown near a verse reference (for example pistis where near Gal 5:22). Can anyone show me how I would accomplish this? thanks Simon
Lorinda H. M. Hoover
Try this: -Open the commentary you want to search -Set the Search field for "Greek Content" and type the word you are looking for -click on the + symbol to the right of the search field; a second field is added -set the second field to "Scripture" and type the Scripture you want -Perform the search You might also try setting the second field to "Reference," although that didn't seem to work for me. Lorinda H. M. Hoover
On a second try, using the Reference field did work. Here's the difference: Reference limits the search to commentary/sections devoted to discussing a particular verse reference, for example, the NET notes on Galatians 5:22. Scripture will find any other place in the work that mentions the Scripture you are searching for. In NET Notes, for example a Scripture search for Galatians 5:22 finds the notes on John 15:5 and Ephesians 5:9, but not the note on Galatians 5:22. Lorinda Edited August 23, 2013 by Lorinda H. M. Helen Brown
To search all of your commentaries for two fields at once is not easy. You can set up a User Group in the Library. You can search this group using Search All. You can also amplify to the group from a word in the text via the right-click menu or the Library, but both of these search only one field. However, when you amplify to a tool from a word in a Bible text, you have the option (in Preferences: General) to also find the verse reference when it occurs with the word. This will also work if you set up and save a workspace with the tools you want to search, and amplify to that workspace, but you may need to set up the fields correctly in each tool. Joel Brown
You can also used the under-appreciated logic menu for the extra fields. By doing the Scripture Gal 3:22 OR Reference Gal 3:22, you can get both results (note, for my search, I set the scope to be Paragraph, not Article, within the Magnifying glass menu, as I wanted closer proximity). Helen Brown
Yes, Joel, but the question was how to search all the commentaries at once for this combination.
