Psalm 60 - Where Is Verse 1?

I am wondering what happened to Psalm 60:1 in my Accordance BHS? Psalm 60 begins with verse 2, though there is a verse 1 in my print copy of BHS. Any input on this would be helpful.

This is a very common question. There are two issues here:

1. The search text determines which verses are displayed and in what order. If you have a different text in a text pane, the verse numbering may be different but it will match in content the verses you have looked up in the search text.

2. The Psalm titles are one or two verses in Hebrew but are not a verse in English so we make them verse 0. If there is one verse in the title, and you search for the entire psalm in any text, you will get all the verses, i.e. Ps 61. But if you search for Ps 60:1-12 with an English search text, you will skip the title, and if the BHS is in parallel it will correctly show verses 3-14. If you make the BHS the search text you will get verses 1-12 but not verses 13-14, but the English in parallel will show verses 0-10. Thus it is best to search the BHS for the entire psalm.

I hope this helps.

Dear Helen,

Thank you for your response. Here is what I did that caused the problem.

First, I opened Psalm 60 in a window in NKJV.

Second, I then opened a second window with the BHS text. For whatever reason, verse 1 is not visible when this is done. In fact displaying both Psalm 59-60 at the same time still causes Psalm 60:1 to be skipped.

However, if I open a new workspace and a new BHS window and display Psalm 60, then verse 1 does occur.

I understand your comments, but maybe this is something that needs correction?

It seems that the difficulty in this Psalm is that the heading is two verses in the Hebrew, which I believe is the longest heading of any Psalm. May this is the difficulty in accounting how Accordance can account for a two verse introduction.

Yes, as I said, it is the two word Psalm title, and you must use the BHS as the search text in order to see it. This is the way Accordance has always handled these verses, sorry.

Interestingly, if you use CJB as your search text, you will get v. 1 in the BHS, although it appears as the second verse in the text. If you use BHS as your search text, vv. 1 and 2 are reversed in the CJB.
