Printing - margins

Ben

Recommended Posts

"This window cannot be printed since one or more panes will be too narrow."

I get this message when I want to print, but the margins are only 20mm (less than an inch) on each side and I'm printing to A4 paper. It doesn't matter if I have three panes open or just one, I always get the error message.

Thanks for your help.

Make sure that "Pane width same as window" is not checked.

When I've had this problem on an old Powerbook (1400, running system 8), it's often been because the chooser hasn't been set correctly, or my printer isn't connected. If Helen's suggestion doesn't work, you might check those issues, too.

Woah! I just logged in expecting to see more replies, but it looks like my last post didn't go through. (And we have a bit of a response lag since I'm writing this while you're asleep over there in the US).

What I said was that the "Pane width same as window" is not checked and that I tried plugging in my printer and letting it boot before trying File>Print again but to no avail. I've never had trouble printing from any other application.

Any further help would be appreciated.

What Mac OS, what Printer are you using? Do you have the latest printer driver for your system?

Do you get the same message when you use horizontal page orientation?

Does the same text print OK from another application?

There have been issues with some printers, obviously we cannot test every possible combination. Someone else may offer a solution.

Hi Helen,

I'm using Mac OS 10.4.5, the latest version and the printer is a Samsung ML-1710 mono laser. I am using the latest driver and I haven't had any trouble with the printer in any other application.

The text prints fine from Word etc.

I'm puzzled as to why the printer would be at fault, in terms of a compatibility problem with Accordance, since I don't get anywhere near the Print... page. When I've had problems with printers in the past, it's usually been at that point or after, if you follow me. I can't even print to PDF.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Which version of Accordance are you using? I know there were print problems with earlier versions of 6 so please download the latest version.

Using 6.9.2, I replicated Ben's margins (20mm all around) and A4 paper size and got some inconsistent results: Accordance would either give the alert (when I had three panes open, never with two or one) that "one or more panes will be too narrow," or else it would crash trying to print. Once in a while, it would successfully print to PDF, but not more than two panes, and once, it even printed the two panes with an uneven width, e.g., 75%/25%. Could it be something specific to A4?

I'm assuming what has been referred to as "Pane width same as window" in this thread is actually the "Page width same as window" setting in the Print Settings.

Tiger does have a "Reset Printing System..." option in the Printer Setup Utility, which is probably worth trying (though drivers may need to be reinstalled), but my experience suggests that this may actually be an obscure bug.

Hi jpkang,

thanks for doing that testing.

Firstly you're right: the check box we've been talking about should be "Page width same as window".

Secondly, it's interesting you could (mostly) print when only 1 or 2 panes were open. I get the error even when I have one pane open. And even when I have only one pane and choose to Print Selection.

I'm hoping this is something fixable and not an obscure bug, as you suggest.

I'm speaking with Helen on Skype tonight (hopefully) so God-willing we'll get something sorted out.

Cheers.

Ok, here we go.

Accordance is fine. I repeat, Accordance is fine.

I am stupid.

The margins weren't set properly; there was a subtle difference on the right margin. It read: 2020.00mm. Yep, you read that correctly.

And so, thanks to Helen, who was very patient while we Skyped our way to a solution, I'm printing an article from Dict. of Jesus and the Gospels as we speak.

Thanks all for your time.

I edited the formatting in your post, was tempted also to remove the comment about yourself. You don't sound stupid at all, and I am just relieved to have found the problem, and that it is not a weird Accordance bug.

The only problem was trying to schedule a talk with Australia at a reasonable hour for us both.
