Support for iOS <4.2 on iPhone

There seems to be a requirement of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhones. Some of us find jailbreaking extremely useful (3G facetime, weather on the lock screen, etc), and though and untethered jailbreak for 4.2 is scheduled to come out soon, I would like to see the requirement dropped for iPhones and iPod touches. I understand it is necessary for iPads.

From what I understand, the only thing added that would help Accordance in 4.2 is the automatic hyphenation. Otherwise 4.1 should work well.

Is this a possibility? I'm anxious to give it a try.

I am going to try to answer this question, as I believe our iOS technical folks are swamped right now. We needed an iOS version that supported international keyboards on both the iPad and the iPhone, which allowed us to do Greek and Hebrew searches. I believe there was also another feature we needed for this feature set that made iOS 4.2 a necessity, but I don't remember what it was.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Again, I know this is true for the iPad. Because it made the jump from 3.2 to 4.2 skipping 4.0 and 4.1, it is necessary to go straight to 4.2. However, the requirement shouldn't be necessary on the iPhone. I just looked in my international keyboards on my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1 and Greek and Hebrew are both options. I think I read that the Cherokee keyboard was added in the 4.2 upgrade for iPhone, but no other keyboards have been added since 4.1.

I'm not sure what the other feature you're thinking of was, but unless it is the automatic hyphenation, I doubt it was added to the iPhone in 4.2, but rather 4.0.

I got to test this out on a friends' phone with 4.2.1. It's great! I love the ability to do side-by-side commentary and Bible on the phone.

However, after all my blabbering about auto-hyphenation required 4.2.1, the feature doesn't even seem to be there! Therefore, I hereby designate this thread as a feature request thread. +1 for automatic hyphenation and the ability to toggle it (unless I missed it of course).

Each iOS version adds more API methods for developers to use. Some are new, others make an old API more useful or easier to use. I bet the Accordance guys just decided to use an API, either for convenience or critical functionality, that requires iOS 4.2. The benefits of these are not necessarily visible to the end user, but they often offer substantial benefits for the developer.

Hope that somehow explains it :)

I understand the API additions. That's why I have been mentioning the addition of auto-hyphenation as that is one of the useful APIs added.

I could be wrong, but my bet is that they used a lot of new API's to 4.0, but none specific to 4.2. They then only required 4.2 because it is the only post-4 version of iOS available to iPad's and then lump the iPhone in with it. My assumption comes because of a similar problem with the game Dungeon Defenders: First Wave. See Forum Post Here They had the same 4.2 requirement for no reason and they are removing it in the next update.

The whole reason of starting this thread was as you said, to know from someone with authority if the 4.2.1 update is required for API's or if they simply required 4.2.1 for no reason.

Since I'm the one who set the minimum iOS requirement, let me give you the definitive answer.

As a relatively small development team we wanted to minimize the number of differences in the application runtime environment we need to deal with. There are already enough significant differences in iOS 4.2 based on hardware alone: iPad interface versus iPhone interface, older generation iPod touches don't actually multi-task, etc that cause code development and support headaches. Every iPhone and iPod Touch that supports 4.0 also supports 4.2 as a FREE upgrade and 4.2 was the first 4.x release that also supported iPad. So it seemed like a natural choice to make. Draw a clear line that is the same for all devices we are supporting and move forward from that.

Sorry if that creates issues for you but at least you now know the reason.

Scott.
