Λύχνις Δαν
Hi ya, I am not sure if this is intended but it happens on both Windows and Mac. When I open a parallel - say ESVS and then open the ESV Study Bible in parallel - the parallel always opens in horizontal mode. I tend to prefer vertical and thought I had it opening that way normally. In any case I try to switch with the little icon and what happens is that it stays in horizontal but the font size icons, gear wheel icon and module name pulldown move to the left of each text. And hitting the switch orientation icon only switches the menu bar items back and forth each time. The only way I can get vertical orientation is to drag one of the panes to the side. At that point then the switch orientation button begins to work as normal. But when in horizontal the menu items are to the left only. And I am not able to drag from vertical to horizontal arrangement. I'm pretty sure this worked differently in the past but perhaps I am wrong. Here is a sequence of screen shots to illustrate. Perhaps someone can comment on whether this is normal or is a recent change or ...? Open ESVS and ESV SB in parallel. After first click on the switch orientation icon : After second click on the switch orientation icon : After dragging to vertical orientation : After clicking on switch orientation icon once more : thx D
Steve King
I'm not 100% sure but I think in previous versions it was only texts that were placed vertically in parallel and all tools were horizontal. If you have two texts and one tool the above behaviour makes more sense because it always switches back to the arrangement you had originally. So initially you have: Then after first switch: Then after second switch it reverts to the original setup: If you move the tool so that it is in parallel vertically then you have the following sequence: In this case you end up with the arrangement you had chosen which is what you would want to happen. The first switch behaves how I expect it to. It does not switch the tool to vertical and the texts to horizontal. All three are horizontal. Of course when you have just one text and one tool it works in exactly the same way - but seems wrong. As it is the orientation of the heading that is changing it seems odd on the one text/one tool example.
Λύχνις Δαν
Hi Steve, Thanx for this. I finally found in the doc a piece I'm pretty sure I missed earlier which indicates that tools do indeed start in a lower row. I've played with your example a little. It was helpful. I think the switching of the tool bar from top to the side of the panes is really about saving vertical space for text to display. I was initially puzzled by the fact that the text of the tool did not switch orientation with the tool bar. I also suspect you are correct that this is not new but I tend to use parallel panes most commonly with texts where columns make more sense. Joel Brown
Daniel, one helpful hint is that you can hold the 'option' (alt on Windows) key when creating a pane to have it default to the vertical orientation, even if it is a tool.
