Window/Palette Organization

Recommended Posts

From reading a post in another thread, I thought I'd bring up (again, I think) how I arrange my windows and palettes and would like to ask you all how you organize them. Please attach screen shots!

The picture shown below is a workspace I created for Aramaic studies (I'm taking a class this semester on the Aramaic Targums). Along the right-hand side is a reader's lexicon I created showing words that occur between 1 and 75 times in the TARG2-T module.

Here is my setup. I'd like to make better use of my space but for the most part this works for me. My Instant Details box auto fades directly over the Library Window.

After a great deal of trial and error, I always play with things, I have come up with the following set up. I owe a great debt to Dr. J and his pod casts. It is a basic set up, but has worked well for me for a while now.

I have the Instant Details somewhat larger, to take advantage of the information it can show, and it auto fades to take advantage of the acreage (I am using a 13" MacBook Pro, so acreage is at a minimum).

Hopefully, I can pick up a tidbit or two from this thread.

In the past I've tried making the ID palette bigger and set to fade as you do in order to not lose screen real estate, but I found it rather annoying because the text(s) I have open 95% of the time are either tagged original language texts or, as you have open, a Strong's English Bible. As a result, no matter where I moved my mouse, the ID palette would appear and I would have to spend time looking for a place I could put my mouse that would allow the ID palette to disappear so that I could get to the Resource palette. But, in that set-up I had the ID palette much bigger than you have yours. Perhaps I hadn't found the right size/shape for the ID palette. I'll keep toying with it...

Here is mine.

William,

What are your font colors and sizes that are shown in your screenshot? I really like them and would like to try it out for myself. It seems very clean and easy on the eyes http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

The font is MgOpenCosmetica. You can get it free online. The colors are custom. You could just use the Color Picker and select the colors from the image I posted. Bible Text is 18 pt. with 50% leading. Everything else is 14 pt. with 35% leading.

Dear All: Thanks so much for the screenshots, very helpful.

Now a question: I noticed that most of you are using another "search box" ? for things like greek or hebrew resources, yet, it is not labeled as such and looks to function differently?

I can create the "box' but do not seem to be able to use it, size it small enough for my 13" macbook, or label it.

Is there a Podcast for this specifically or is it contained within another podcast like hebrew/greek, some function I have missed?

Sorry to be a bother.

In two cases (William Cross and Rick Yentzer), the boxes you are referring to look to be another workspace. The selected tab is a search tab for a Greek or Hebrew resource.

How have you been making your "box" before? There are a couple of ways to set it up in Accordance, and I'm not sure which one they used.

I don't know how well either of those layouts would work on a 13" screen, though. I have an iBook G4 (14 or 15 inch, don't remember), and the screenshots were wider than my screen. I stick to one workspace which takes up most of my screen. When I need a second one, I pull it up on top of my main workspace, and use Command-~ to move between them.

I've attached a couple of screen shots. Note that the selected tab of my main workspace in the "Workspace1" image is not a search tab, but a text tab.

Tab names can be changed by choosing the Window menu, selecting Set, and the Tab Name. Or right-clicking (or control-clicking) on the tab and choosing Set Tab and then Name. Or using a keyboard shortcut (command-option-N). Workspaces are named when you save them.

Here is my screen shot. I have a the instant results window at the bottom set to fade so that it appears when my cursor is over a keyed word in the same area where the ESV Cross Ref and the NET Notes section are. post-29795-126954802513_thumb.png

Seeing everyone's setups has really been a big help. Here is my latest that incorporates a little bit of William's and a little bit of Pastor Vassar's plus some of my original. I think it's a much better use of my overall space.

This is my Hebrew studies arrangement. I find the color-coding of the other texts and their associated translations and notes helpful. The core pane of this layout is the BHS-W4.

I should note that I invoke the resource palette with the shortcut ⌥⌘2 (the ⌥⌘ with my left thumb, and the 2 with my index finger). This gives me more screen real estate.

I love the custom workspaces, everyone. It's amazing how much you can discover about a person from his/her workspace. I've seen a lot of good ideas here.

Thanks for sharing!

I experimented with a reversed color scheme similar to your that closely matched my working coding environment. However I found it somewhat awkward when switching to a PDF that was a normal black text white background setup. Do you find this to be a problem?

Yeah. It can be a headache. And, when you cut and paste you have to change the text to black after pasting. So, a little headache there, but I find it easier on the eyes when i am working so I push through. Great question though. I can be a little fickle, so I am sure it will change.

Thanks, guys. I hadn't thought about moving the instant details up and having it fade away. So now I have a new default layout. Or actually I have this workspace with different tabs, which I duplicate at need. As I use Accordance a 13" laptop now, I chose not to have a separate window for Greek/Hebrow triple click lookups, but instead, just let new tabs pop up and use keybord shortcuts to switch between books/dictionaries etc.

I have three different main layouts, in different tabs, one for comparing texts and reading quick notes etc. Another for reading text and commentaries side by side and a third for comparing texts with outline. (screenshot thumbnails with and without instant details.)

But I assume I will change layouts, as my habits grow and my needs change. So far there's still tools I've hardly used yet ... Awesome software!

If you want to reclaim a bit more screen real estate, you can toggle the Resource Palette with OptionShift-2 (as I mention in my post invoked by pressing the option and shift with the left thumb and the number 2 with the left index finger). After trying it a few times, it's nice to have it out of the way when you're reading. Just a tip.

Good point! Thanks for reminding me of that! :) Are you also using the MG OpenCosmetica font, or is that another font in your screenshot?
