White finally gives up

After years of Mac bashing, prominent baptist apologist James White (aomin.org) has given up on Windows and got himself a Macbook Pro. (See his latest podcast). Perhaps Accordance should contact him and give him a deal since he'd be good marketing if he starts talking about Accordance.

That's funny. When I visited Phoenix Reformed Baptist (where White is an elder) on one trip to Arizona, I had my Mac with Accordance with me, and he made a comment like, "Oh no, not a Mac guy," when he saw me with it. Now he's converted. That's great.

Sadly, our experience has been that diehard Windows users take some time adapting to the Mac and even longer to see the virtues of Accordance. It may be better to give him time to make the transition. Of course, if anyone knows him personally and can demo Accordance to him, that may encourage him to try it.

The bad news is that Logos/Libronix has a Mac version in Alpha testing right now. He may go that route as it salvages his investment in the PC modules since they are interchangeable. Who knows what somebody else may choose?

As the owner of both Logos and Accordance, I believe that Logos Mac is a very long way from being a threat to Accordance. The Mac version is stripped down in that it lacks many of the features that makes Logos viable Bible Study software. Now that Alpha testing has ended and Beta testing has begun, it appears that these limitations will still be present in the released Mac version. In other words, Logos Mac will be far inferior to the Windows version.

I'm not an expert on Logos for Windows, although I have used it off and on for years.

The Mac Logos version is certainly not the full blown Windows version. But I will say that it is WAY faster than the Windows version. I don't know enough about the market to know whether it is much of a threat to Accordance.

The FAQ specifically says that the Logos alpha and beta are stripped down versions that do not include features that will be in the final release version. I really don't expect them to put out a bare-bones release; they have a fine reputation and have no doubt worked hard to get it. I can't see them risking that with a poorly done Mac version.

I myself lust for a few things Logos offers that Accordance does not -Collegeville commentary! Buy it from Lit Press, not Logos, to save a lot of money- but in general their support for Catholics is far, far inferior to Accordance. And they charge twice as much for their Early Church Fathers set - for their price it had better have a plug directly into my brain.

All I want is big kittel :-)

But here's the thing: If the beta version is stripped down, then it's not a true beta. You don't beta test an incomplete product. What if the new features add bugs? That's what a beta test is for. I heard in a seminary class 2+ years ago from someone who said "wait for the mac logos, it should be out in a few months" and I launched into an accordance sales pitch, not the least of which was "guys, it's here right now and it works better than logos now..."

If they are showing a feature incomplete beta, they are still a LONG way from a proper release.

Logos is very clear with their beta testers that the Mac version will not include all the features of the Windows version. The final version will, as I understand, include features alluded to in the beta version (i.e., grayed out menu options, etc.). I've been following the newsgroup discussion for beta testers moderated by Logos, and company reps have several times indicated the Mac version will not include the full feature set.

So not a bare bones version, but not a full-featured one either. I guess that's a good place to start. Just imagine how long it would take to do a PC version of Accordance if they tried to put out the complete feature set at once! I like Accordance. It does all I want and probably dozens of other things I've never even thought of doing. (Really ought to get that training video one of these days!)

I want more modules for Accordance, but so does everybody else. We just all have our own list of modules we crave, which varies by denomination and interest area. I'd like the Papal Encyclicals, English and Latin, but, just as an example, I don't think ToddPeperkorn has much use for them as a Lutheran.
