1873 Oxford TR vs Stepanus 1550 TR

@ 1Tim 1:4 — The CNTTS apparatus says οιδονομιαν οικονομιαν is supported by the TR (Oxford). The Stepanus 1550 we have in Accordance has οικοδομιαν. Is this an error in the CNTTS, or do the two versions of the TR read differently here?

Where Julie? I can't find the word οιδονομιαν anywhere, am I right in assuming you mean οικονομιαν? If that's the case, then we are talking about 1Tim 1:4 (note 24)..correct?

 

Metzger doesn't note it does he...

 

1.4 οἰκονομίαν {A}

 

The Western οἰκοδομήν (D* syrp, hmg) is the easier reading, but οἰκονομίαν, supported by the overwhelming weight of witnesses, gives a deeper meaning.

 

The 1894 Scrivener's TR has οικοδομιαν and the Stephanus at bibledatabase has οικονομιαν

 

So it seems like 2 readings...

 

Someone with more LXX knowhow than me will need to comment now.

Ken – Sorry for the confusion caused by the mistake in my post. The Stephanus TR reads οικοδομιαν; both the GNT28th and the GNT-Byz read οικονομιαν. I think the various TR's must read differently. And there was more than one version published by Stephanus, as well.

 

Here's a shot of the pertinent part of the CNTTS.

 

 

The Oxford TR (I don't have one) is the edition used for the CNTTS. Perhaps it agrees with the GNT-Byz instead of Stephanus.

 

The NA28th Apparatus has both οικοδομ* variants. Obviously, neither is well supported. I was just wondering why the TR I have in Accordance and the TR used by CNTTS did not agree about the reading. Probably because the two really TR's don't agree?

FWIW, I just checked Stephanus' 1550 ed. and can verify that he prints οικονομιαν while Scrivener's 1894 ed. has οικοδομιαν in the text (only due to the KJV's following Beza and the Elzevir here by rendering that word with "edifying") but Stephanus' proper reading οικονομιαν in the apparatus.

Thanks for checking it out for me, Jonathan. There really were multiple versions of the TR, just like we suspected. Well, it's nice to have the questions answered. I'll put it in my User Notes.

 

EDIT: In the About This Text for the Accordance TR, it says, "adjusted against the text of “The Greek New Testament: The Greek Text Underlying the English Authorised Version of 1611,” published by the Trinitarian Bible Society." So Stephanus' TR was adjusted to agree with the original KJV.
