Recycle Windows Preferences

I'd like to see an option in the preferences that would allow the user to turn off recycling on all newly opened windows. Or, if you wanted to be really fancy, perhaps users could set separate preferences for text windows and tool windows recycling.

More often than not, I don't want the windows to recycle. I work with user tools with the lectionary readings and the readings for non-lectionary sermon series to pull up tabs for each of the readings. Having to remember to turn off recycling in each window after I've clicked on the link in the tool is a bit of a nuisance; I frequent forget, and then have to redo my "amplyfing" to a new text window.

A recent post about text sets in text panes got me to thinking about this request again. Would anyone else find this a helpful feature, or is it just me?

I would find it helpful to have that option, esp. to change it on the fly for things like the photoguide when I want to open several photos quickly.

A little-known new feature is that you can simply click the icon to turn the recycling on and off.

Also Command click on a thumbnail opens the picture in a new window instead of recycling an open window.

Perhaps these will help.

Helen,

I did know about clicking the icon, and I was thrilled when it was added, since I was one of those who requested it. It is helpful, but it's not quite as convenient as what I'm thinking of (which combines both the recycling preferences discussed here and the opening text sets as panes discussed elsewhere). Here's the context I'm thinking of:

Each week I set up a workspace for my sermon prep. I use the Revised Common Lectionary, so I always have four text tabs: Old Testament Reading, Psalm, Epistle, and Gospel. Since I am a United Methodist who sometimes attends a text stuy with (ELCA) Lutherans, sometimes I have two OT and Psalms tabs, as the Lutherans use the "alternate" OT/Psalm readings during Ordinary time. The OT tabs are set up with two English translations, the BHS-W4 and LXX1. The NT tabs have two English translations and the GNT-T. I have a workspace saved in this configuration. To set it up for the given week I have to:

Click on the OT tab

Turn on recycling

Click on the RCL User Tool

Click on the OT Scripture link

Click on the OT tab

Turn off recycling

And then repeat this process for the other 3 (or 5) readings.

If, on the other hand, I could a) control-click on a Scripture Link and choose a text set to open in one tab and B) have recycling turned off, my process would be:

Click on the RCL User Tool tab

Control-click on a reference and choose the appropriate text set

repeat the last step 3 to 5 times.

That said, I have no idea how difficult it would be to make this possible, nor do I know whether there would be enough interest in this combination of features to justify the effort.
