Daily Bible Reading Plans

Okay well I have done a search here in the forums for "Daily Bible Reading Plans" and I haven't come up with anything. Here's my situation.

Back in the Middle of May (Before I purchased Accordance) I decided to follow a Daily Bible Reading Plan to read the Bible through in a year. I wanted to accomplish this using the chronological method. So after much Googling, I finally found a place on-line that would allow me to set my start date on any date of the year and then I would go online each day and check off the days reading. I also discovered that my Olive Tree app for my iPad had the same Bible Reading Plan that you could follow and likewise mark each day off as you accomplished each assignment. It's hard to find apps that will allow you to adjust the start date to any day of the year.

So I'm doing pretty good, it helps to have the entire Bible in audio MP3 format installed in iTunes so I can listen versus read during the.... can I say boring parts? (come on, I'm sure Im not the only one that finds it hard to keep interest is some of the Old Testament books. Specifically the genealogies parts.) Anyway I've started to experience problems with the on-line website that I've been using to track my progress. It's really a pain in the neck and slow as can be, plus It's stated to mess up lately and not accept my update checkmarks so I had to start it over and .... man it's just too much work to have to cheek off one day at a time since May 20th and as I was doing it, it broke on me :( I still have the chart going in my Olive Tree app, but now that I have Accordance, I would think there was a module that I could activate and mark off the days I've already read so I can keep going with my current plan.

So, is their such a module for Accordance? I did find the Daily Bible Readings tool under General Tools but It doesn't appear that I can change the start date nor does it appear that his had a progression application that I can check off.

There is a chronological plan, but there are only two ways to mark where you are. One is to save the window and workspace (use Save as if you didn't make a change in the settings), and the other is to use highlighting of the words. We hope to improve the functionality of the reading plans in the future, but for now they are just ordinary tools, and bookmarks are not saved when you quit and reopen Accordance.

If you set the General Preferences to last Session, and leave those readings open, you will of course come back to where you were.

Hi Helen

Is this the same plan as I had mentioned? You caught me off guard there with the comment that Accordance doesn't save bookmarks when you exit. I haven't learned to use bookmarks yet, but Im not sure if I understand. What good it is to bookmark something if you can't go back to it the next time you run the program? Has my iPad spoiled me? Both the Kindle app, and the iBooks app not only save bookmarks, but index them as well. Even my little PocketBible for the iPhone will save bookmarks. Surely I'm misunderstanding.

Would another option be to save the session versus save the workspace? Can you save more than one sessions? LIke if I have a daily Bible reading session, versus a daily Bible Study Session on a specific book?

Thanks.

P.S. I purchased that upgrade to Premier Level via the payment plan. Margaret was very helpful. Thanks for the suggestion. Funny, I was setting here last night hoping that I would get the DVD in the mail tomorrow so I could do the upgrade and It hit me, I have the unlock code that Margaret sent me, I don't have anything but the Graphics DVD that I'm waiting for. So I upgraded and didn't get to bed until 4:30 am this morning :) I just got the Graphics DVD in the mail a few min ago. I hope I can get to bed at a decent time tonight LOL.

You can save any number of sessions or workspaces as separate files, but only one as your startup, either the last session or your default session.

We hope to improve the bookmarks, but currently they are more useful as automatic highlights of the hits when you are displaying all the text. You can use them during a session to mark a paragraph. Sorry, but just like me, Accordance isn't yet perfect.

I am away from home and have my laptop (hopefully soon an ipad), but do not always have an internet connection. My daily Bible reading plan is actually from Bible League of Canada, a book i don't want to take with me everywhere I go. I put my Bible reading plan into a user tool by making a list of dates with scripture hyperlinks, but you could just as easily create your own by modifying another plan to work with whatever start date you want. It doesn't take all that long to set it up, and I usually just do a month or two at a time, so it is not a big chore. Once it is done, you can just open your user tool, click on the hyperlink, and you have the days reading instantly in front of you! :)

Hi Bev

That sounds great! I don't have an MacBook but maybe when OakTree gets the iPad app ready, we would be able to do something like that with Accordance on the iPad. Actually if someone would just develop an iPhone app that didn't necessarily have the Bible content, but would simply allow you to select what kind of plan you wanted to follow and enter a start date, then provide a way to check it off as you completed each reading, that would be awesome.

I have yet to learn how to use the user tools, but it looks like a powerful tool!

It would also be pretty cool if they would have the app sync with iCal on your Mac and list the days reading. Make it a specific color if it hasn't been read, and make it grayed out if it has been read. Then next time you reset the plan, it would reset iCal. (If only I was a programer, I have all kinds of ideas! LOL)

Problem solved... well until someone comes up with something better, but this isn't too bad of a work-around.

The daily readings module provided in Accordance is a great plan, the only problem (as I've previously mentioned) you can't set your own start date and I didn't think God would be please with me if I had said back on May 20, "Lord, I'll just wait until Jan 2011 to start a daily read the Bible through plan" So... this is what we worked out.

I'm using Accordances' provided plan and marking off each completed reading (as suggested) using a cross out highlight. To keep track of which day I'm suppose to read what scripture, it takes a little bit of extra work, but very beneficial. I simply created a new calendar in iCal named Daily Readings. I added that calendar to my "Home" calendar group. I'll then open up the chronological reading plan in Accordance, copy and paste each days scripture reference and paste it in the target date as a new "all-day" event. It's a lot less work that way then if I would of chosen to set a specific time of day with bells and whistles and all. By using the "all-day" event, the full text of the scripture reference shows up on the calendar without having to open the event.

It's really quite painless, just a couple clicks of the mouse for adding each days readings. Then, since I have mobile me, the scripture reference gets uploaded to all of my other devices such as my iPhone and iPad. ICal makes it easy to toggle off a group of calendars or any individual calendar so I can temporally toggle off my Daily Readings Calendar or my "Home group" to view my calendar with a little less clutter.

If I wanted, I could of chose to have each daily event repeat ever year, but I chose to just make it active for this year, next year I might want to start a new reading plan. ;)

Ron,

Would you mind sharing your iCal calendar?

Hi Mark, just published it, but when I tried to access it, it said it was temporally unavailable. Here's the link:

Keep in mind, I just started in Genesis back around May 20th and am currently in Joshua. Also I don't have September and the rest of the months filled in yet, but will get the next months input at the end of this month.
