Please Help -- Need Advice -- Accordance Purchase

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing Accordance but I'm not really sure what to buy. I currently have QuickVerse 2007 Black Box Edition for Mac. It has 15 Bibles and 65 reference titles. I primarily use the Bibles and Strongs Concordance and occasionally some parts of the other reference materials. I use other web sites too (mostly biblegateway.com) to look up verses in translations the software doesn't have. Although I've been a Christian for many years I haven't really learned to effectively study the Bible. I read it almost daily but my study habits leave much to be desired but I'm determined to change that. My primary interests right now are digging deeper into short passages and specific verses. I like to see what the words are in the original (like which form of the word love is used for example). There are a few types of Bibles I tend to reference most - KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB, NCV, NLT, MSG, AMP. I'd like to get as many of these as possible to start with and can always add more later.

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thank you,

-Paul

Hi Paul,

It's great to hear of your determination to dig deeper into God's Word. It sounds like a great place for you to start would be with the Library collection. If you select the premier level, you will get all the English Bibles you would need (or a very high percentage of them) plus a nice library of study aids, such as commentaries, dictionaries, books, and so on. You can always start off smaller than the premier level, and purchase the introductory level and then upgrade from there. Also, don't hesitate to contact the Accordance Sales Team by phone and discuss your needs with them. They always are able to help you put together the best package for your needs at the best price.

I hope this helps,

Robb

I would agree with Rob's recommendation, except that I would say to start with the Library Standard or higher. Doing this will ensure that you get the ESVS and NAS95S, which are great tools to help you better understand the underlying Greek/Hebrew (they are similar in function to an interlinear).

Hi, Paul!

I agree that the Library Collection would be the place to start. In fact, I'd suggest you just go ahead and purchase it at the introductory level ($99). See if it meets your needs, you can always upgrade to a higher level later. If you have more money to spend, consider the Graphics DVD ($189) with the Timeline, Atlas and PhotoGuide 3. The combo will give you a number of Bible translations, several good dictionaries, an array of devotional guides, a key number Bible (KJVS) and related Heb/Gk dictionaries, in short, everything you'll need. [be sure to tell the sales folks which additional Bible you'd like to unlock for free].

The next two podcasts are going to be covering how to do Inductive Bible Study with Accordance. I think this kind of study is a wonderful way to start getting into God's Word for yourself. You can subscribe through iTunes: search for "Lighting the Lamp." I trust it will be a blessing!

Hmm... just read Rick's comment. Give the Library Standard some thought. I DO like the ESV, especially if you decide to purchase the ESV Study Bible add-on, which is great!

Hello Paul,

Fantastic to hear you're looking to deepen your time in the Word! I think you'll find that Accordance is the absolute best tool for doing what you want to do. You'll also find the people on the forums and the Accordance team at Oaktree to be over the top in terms of helpfulness.

I would suggest you check out the podcast on the ESV Study Bible. I think this podcast does an excellent job showing off the power of accordance bible texts with reference tools.

To see a nice example of how you can do deep, inductive bible study with accordance, check out the accordance blog article on just that subject here.

I personally would suggest you start with the Library Standard Collection, but I cannot stress how important it is to your optimal selection that you give the Accordance team a call. They'll be able to fit you with just the right package and get you just the ala carte options you're looking for.

If I were in your position, knowing what I know today, I'd do the Library Standard and the Zondervan Essentials CD with all the NIV-related materials I think you would want to start with. That will give you all the bible versions except for NCV, and a number of other significant bible texts I think you'll really enjoy (e.g. ESV and the Greek and Hebrew resources you allude to as well).

If you're feeling like you want to step it up a bit, add on the IVP Reference Collection or the Anchor Bible Dictionary (I've spent countless hours in ABD... an awesome resource!). I personally would do this before going to premier library level.

Again, give the Accordance sales team a call. They are fantastic!

Thank you everyone for all of the help and guidance. I watched the podcast on the ESV Study Bible and that seems like a great way for me to get started. I am very interested in learning to do inductive bible study as shown in the blog. That seems to fit my interests very well and would really help me to understand the Bible that much more.

Right now I'm leaning toward Library Standard + ESV Study Bible Add-on. The other products mentioned all sound great but for someone like me just starting out may be more than I really need. One of the things that attracts me to Accordance is that I can get something now and upgrade as I go and my investment along the way is preserved.

I may give the sales team a call or just take the plunge :) Does Accordance run sales on Library Standard or similar? I noticed the Current Specials section of the site but none of the smaller ones like Library Standard are listed there.

I have been around Bible Software for years and that ESV video was one of the best I have ever seen in teaching someone how to start using a software package to study the Bible. It was simple, but had some real meat to it. So many times the basic videos just don't connect the dots or they get too complicated. Well done.

I agree and after watching the video I felt like it was a bible study method I could do and really get something out of. The video was very well done and I look forward to future podcasts on the subject.

As one who just took the leap allow me to highly recommend Accordance to you. As a user of other Bible study software (Logos 3 for PC and Mac, Wordsearch 8 for Mac) I desperately wanted something that was truly native to my MacBook which I purchased about 4 months ago. This has been a period of profound change for me migrating from the PC world into the Mac world and changing Bible study software. Both changes had a significant learning curve but one that so far has been well worth the effort. I purchased the Premier Library Collection with the ESV Study Bible add-on. Accordance is great stuff!
