The more I use MT-LXX, the more I like it; it provides a lightning-fast way to glean most of the information I could gather by rummaging through Hatch-Redpath for an hour or so. I would love to hear what others are doing with it.

As fast as it is, there must (or should!) be quicker and easier ways to do what I'm doing with it. Here's an example from my work this morning to illustrate. I'm working in the Sinaiticus Psalter (which is a separate issue; it would be awesome if we could get a tagged text covering the whole of Sinaiticus and not just NT…) and wondered to what extent μακαριος overlaps with אשׁרי in wider LXX usage. Enter MT-LXX. Here's what I found and typed up in my user notes:

1μακαριος translates אשׁרי some 37x according to MT-LXX (see below for references). At Ps 144:15 (143:15 LXX) אשׁרי has as its equivalent ἐμακάρισαν, and at Prov 8:32 there is a long minus, so there is nothing in Greek to correspond. Other uses of μακαριος all correspond to some form of אשׁר.

אשׁרי=μακαριος

Deut 33:29; 1Kgs 10:8 (2x); Isa 30:18; Isa 56:2; Ps 1:1; Ps 2:12; Ps 32:1; Ps 32:2 [31.2]; Ps 33:12 [32.12]; Ps 34:9 [33.9]; Ps 40:5 [39.5]; Ps 41:2 [40.2]; Ps 65:5 [64.5]; Ps 84:5 [83.5]; Ps 84:6 [83.6]; Ps 84:13 [83.13]; Ps 89:16 [88.16]; Ps 94:12 [93.12]; Ps 106:3 [105.3]; Ps 112:1 [111.1]; Ps 119:1 [118.1]; Ps 119:2 [118.2]; Ps 127:5 [126.5]; Ps 128:1 [127.1]; Ps 137:8 [136.8]; Ps 137:9 [136.9]; Ps 144:15 [143.15]; Ps 146:5 [145.5]; Job 5:17; Prov 3:13; Prov 8:34; Prov 20:7; Prov 28:14; Dan 12:12; 2 Chr 9:7

(Cf. also Sir 14:1, 2, 20; Sir 25:8; Sir 26:1; Sir 31:8 [34.8]; Sir 48:11; Sir 50:28.)

√אשׁר=μακαριος

Gen 30:13; Isa 31:9 [MT has אֲשֶׁר־]; Isa 32:20; Psa 128:2 [127.2]; Eccl 10:17

Now, finding this information was, as I said, lightning fast. But getting it into my user notes was surprisingly laborious for Accordance. The major hurdle was the verse references. Apparently I cannot "Copy As: References" from a Reference Tool. Neither could I open a text in parallel with a reference tool (the way you can open a reference tool in parallel with a text) and copy as references from the text. For me, this meant I had to copy all, then strip out the Greek, Hebrew, paragraph breaks, etc. in order to have just the verse references for my notes.

Surely there is a faster/better way? But, even if not, this is much faster than working with paper. And, incidentally, I did discover that I can use find/replace in the user notes Edit window by hitting command-f, which saved a lot of time.

So, two questions for those of you who have been using MT-LXX longer and/or more extensively than I have so far: Is there a way to do this kind of collating of results in a quicker, easier fashion? And, what other kinds of things do you find the tool useful for?

Also, for Abram K-J and others, here is a link to my saved workspace for using MT-LXX, with BHS-W4 changed over to HMT-W4.

Aha! Looks like I can also attach it as a .zip, so here it is.

Thanks in advance!

Tony

Sill not sure how this allows for results that look like Hatch and Redpath's concordance (or Muraoka) without major footwork. Should there not be a way to find a greek lemma in the LXX and then find every lemma in the Hebrew MT that has been matched up with that according to Tov's MT-LXX (for retroverting the LXX)? Then send that to analytics for a list out?

Corey: There is no tagged database that matches the Greek word with the Hebrew at each location. We are doing the best that we can without such a tool. Now if someone were to tag the LXX with the Hebrew lemmas or Strong's numbers.....

Anyone else out there know of a faster way to generate a reference-only list from MT-LXX search results? I still haven't found one.

Hey Tony,

I confess I do not use this module much but have it looking forward to the time when my Hebrew is adequate to use it.

In any case one thing that seems might save you time is to set Show Text As -> Add Titles. That appears to give you a line with a reference on one line followed by text on the next. If you copy that and paste it into a here document a terminal window piped to a grep for a ":" you'll get just the refs in a single line command. So for a simple makarios example from a search for Greek content :

[Daniel-Semlers-iMac:~] dsemler% cat <<EOF | grep ":"
