Is adding the TNIV useful?

At this point, I believe it would be useful only for translation comparison or a study in the history of the New International Version.

 It's also only purchasable via

ZONDERVAN PERSONAL GROWTH BIBLE STUDY SUITE FOR MACINTOSH® CD-ROM

the TNIV like the NIVr and NIV 1984 have all been replaced by the singular NIV'11.

So the NIV 11 replaces the TNIV?

To be clear, does the NIV 11 has all the gender neutral features of the TNIV?

I would use the phrase "gender accurate" over "gender neutral," but the answer to your question is essentially yes. However, the NIV11 is slightly more conservative on this issue with a handful of translations scaled back (such as Gen 1:26), probably due to the influence of Mounce being added to the committee that produced the NIV11.

No, not all. The NIV11 took a step back on best translation practices in relation to language of gender. It was due to pressure/backlash from the more conservative communities that rejected the development.

Nice to know that Joe. I will have to look more carefully into the TNIV...... I had avoided it because I have always preferred the NRSV or if i want to go evangelical version i thought the NLT was more popular choice.... I honestly have most always just ignored the TNIV that i own in a couple programs...

Gen. 1:26 (NRSVS)  ¶ Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

Gen. 1:26 (TNIV) Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,a and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Gen. 1:26 (NIV11-GK) Then God said, “Let usa make mankindb in our image,c in our likeness,d so that they may rulee over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,f over the livestock and all the wild animals,a and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Gen. 1:26 (NLT-SE)  Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

I admittedly prefer NRSV, like the NLT but it feels like a big step backward to go to mankind.... I honestly can't even remember the last time i heard someone say that. But each to their own...

I use the TNIV in Accordance nearly every day (with NIV84 and NIV11 open for comparison). Well put, Joe. You hate to think "politics" would creep into translation committees, but, well... people are people.

I held off for a while on purchasing TNIV in Accordance, and have not once regretted spending a little extra to have it here.

But is the TNIV a current Bible or has been discontinued in print also?

I am just looking at it as a comparison Bible and not necessarily as my main study Bible but only if still a current published and updated Bible.

I know that Logos does not have it nor has plans to have it.

No, I don't think Zondervan is printing it anymore. If it weren't for its existence on that physical CD-ROM, Accordance wouldn't be able to sell it to you, either.

That CD-ROM, by the way, has some other good stuff, like the Thematic Study Bible.

David - one other consideration is what translation are the people that you minister to using?  what about the congregation you attend?  if they have the TNIV or NIV11 if it worthwhile to have regardless of how we feel about it's worthiness as a translation.

Rodney Decker, who frequents these forums, has a review of the NIV2011 in Themelios (http://thegospelcoal...ational_version) which also touches a bit on the TNIV.  I found his review informative and helpful.

FYI, the Thematic Reference Bible was republished as The Dictionary of Bible Themes, available for separate purchase here. It is also included in several of our Collections.

and to be explicit (from my reading), Zondervan has discontinued all previous versions - the only current translation is the NIV (NIV11).

like other translations (ESV for instance) it seems they will keep updating the one version, rather than going down the route of producing a suite of translations (NIrV, TNIV etc).

Douglas, that's right.

I rather liked the TNIV, too. I still have a couple print Bibles in good condition of that version and have it in Accordance, so am able to use it as needed.
