How can one search highlights?

Suppose one has read thru a text in Accorance & marked all the references to Denials (like saying one did not laugh) in some color, a topic not necessarily keyed to some specific set of words.  So one has all the Denials marked in red.

Is there then a way to search for these highlights and have them displayed in serial order?

Hi Enoch,

The way to search for them is a [STYLE ?] search. Just type [STYLE Denials] into your search argument box on a search tab and hit enter. I'm assuming the name of your highlight style is Denials, given the above. I don't know exactly what you mean by serial order but the search results work the way a normal search result does.

Thx

D

Well, I just tried it.  I have a Highlight Category called Transformation.  Three of the subcategories are Glory = yellow, Love = Pink, & Structure = Green.  I entered [STYLE GLORY] and searched.  But all the highlights under Transformation came, all the colors, all the highlights, not just the Glory yellow ones.

Hmmm.... I don't know what a Highlight Category is. I didn't think you could group highlights except by having a new Highlight file. I may well be wrong though as I'm not a big user of highlighting. That said, I tried a test and if I have multiple highlights in the same verse but only search on one of them, the verse will appear with both highlights present. Is that the issue you are having ? If so I'm not sure that there is a way to avoid that. Perhaps someone else knows. If that's not the issue, a screenshot of the offending results might help clarify things.

Thx

D

Daniel is right. Searching for a highlight displays those verses that have that highlight included. It displays the verse as it is with all the highlights shown not just the one searched for. Searching for a particular highlight does not 'switch off' the other other highlight in you highlight file.

I don't know what Daniel (blessed be he for his help) was right about. ???

At any rate, the Accordance term is "Highlight File."  I failed to use Accordance Dialect, calling it "Highlight Category."

Within my Highlight File entitled, "Transformation," there are colors, creatable by "Define Highlight Style."

Thus I have yellow for glory & pink for love (as 2 means of Transformation [2 Cor 3:18 beholding the Glory of YHWH; & "the love of Christ constrains"]).

So, I want to be able (for example) to bring up the list of glory-highlighted verses.

Daniel's Lion-Den-method brought up all the lions!  Not just the glory.

All the categories under Transformation came up with their different color-hightlit verses.

BTW, is there a master glossary of the Accordance Dialect?

I think Steve meant that I was right about all the highlights in a single highlight file being displayed no matter whether they were listed in the [STYLE ?] query or not. But without seeing what you are seeing I do not know if this is what you are hitting.

As to a glossary it turns out there is one in the help pages but it does not cover that many terms and none related to highlighting. The glossary is access on the third tab in the left hand navigation pane of the help pages.

The only way to pick it up would appear to be to use the help and read the relevant sections (in this Highlighting) and pick it up that way.

At this point I think I probably need to be able to actually see what the problem is in Accordance to help you much further. I think there are two ways to do this. First you could upload a screenshot of the workspace showing the highlights and the query that you have entered and pointing out exactly what you have a problem with and then I can see if its the same thing that I think it is.

Alternatively I'd need your highlight file and tell me the bible text you are running the highlighting and queries against, and if you also give me the exact query you are entering. Now, I hope I have the bible text you are using - I have a bunch but certainly not all. And I hope its not in Hebrew :) as I have no Hebrew but even that might not be a big obstacle if its just highlighting.

thx

D

tnx dan.  But before I try to figure out how to do a screen shot & move it here,
it is simple to describe in words:

I do your search function, but instead of just getting the yellow highlight GLORY highlights,
I get all of the highlights in all colors highlit under Transformation, the Highlight file,
all the various colors/topics in the transformation file come on screen in result of the search.  My text is ASV 1901.

Here is glory.
Here is love.
Here is structure.

But all I want is the glory highlights.

Instead when I do your [STYLE GLORY] search
I get all 3 colors, all 3 highlights, all 3 subjects.

Can't you understand that without a screen shot?  A screen shot would not show this unless there happened to be more than one subject highlight on a given page.

Hey Enoch,

Its not so much that I cannot understand what you are saying but that I cannot see what you are seeing. But let's try with this.

The point I'm trying to clarify is this : when the search returns its hits they are by verse. If there are highlights for love and structure in verses that also contain glory highlights those highlights will appear in the results also. That is simply because the highlights occur in the same verse. Now if there are examples of structure and love highlights appearing in your search results where they are not in verses that also contain glory then there may be something unexpected going on. There are ways this could happen though - for example if your context slider is not set to 0 you will see surrounding verses also.

The point to remember is that the fact that you searched for a particular style does not mean that that is the only content that will appear highlighted in the results.

Thx

D

I would check the Context Slider to make sure that only the expected verse is visible. The Context Slider should be set to "0" to make sure that only the verse with the style you have searched is being displayed. Otherwise, you are getting the searched style as well as surrounding verses (depending on the Context Slider setting). This pic shows the Context Slider set to 3 ... make sure yours is 0.

I went & learned how to take a screen shot.  I defined the screen shot window & tried to paste it here.  But your system rebuked me,  "An error occurred.  You are not allowed to use that image extension on this communiity."  Does Accordance  forum think Accordance Bible program is pornography?  Vot der dumboozle!  LOL

Thanks a lot for your help.  I understand your explanation.  I will retry & see if that was what was happening.

You need to make sure its either a jpg, png or tiff. The first two are preferred as they work better in the forum system.

Well Daniel,

I tried searching [STYLE glory] and used 0 slider.  Apparently I got all the Transformation file highlit passages, not just glory.  The results included got love highlights which were not contiguous with glory.

Incidentally, when I tried the sreen shot, I simply followed the Mac directions for screen shot, but I used the one for selecting a box, not the full screen one, because my name is displayed at right top corner on full screen screen shot.  I suppose Apple is doing that.  Perhaps if I leave Safari on in the background & set Safari on "full screen" my name would not be on the screen shot, since Safari full screen cuts off the name line. -- no that doesn't work, becs then I can't bring up Accordance.  Now Control R brings up reading mode and my name line is gone.  But for my taste, the result of Reading mode is an unappealing display on a white background.

Hmm....  I'm wondering if there's a corruption in your Highlights file.  I just tried some style searches, and it only pulls up verses with the style I name in it.

I find the easiest way to do screen shots on a Mac is to use the Grab application.  Its inside the Utilities folder in the Applications Folder.  From Grab you can choose to "grab" a selection, a window, etc.  The downside is that it will only save in tiff format, so I use another app to convert it to jpg or png.

The previewer app will do this for you - or you could just post the TIFF file. Using Grab to capture just the Accordance window should be exactly what you need. And that should resolve the issue of publishing your name with the screenshot.

Thx
