I can't get 6.6 to install. The installer comes up and says that there are 753 files (can't remember the exact number) to install, but the bar graph never moves. All I get is the spinning beach ball. I have to force a restart after 5 minutes. I am running 10.3.9.

Five minutes is not THAT long, I would let it search your drive for longer if you have a lot of files.
In every case that peole have reported a problem like this with an installer, it was due to a problem in the Disk Directory on their hard drive.
You can try repairing disk permissions in Disk Utility, but you may need some of the mkore technical tools or professional help.
